Search for web development company in Pune and you get pages of agencies, all promising the same things. For a business owner who is not technical, it is hard to tell them apart, and the wrong choice costs you months and money. This is a practical guide to picking well, written by people who build websites for a living but will still tell you when a template is the smarter buy.
Start with what you actually need
Before you talk to anyone, get clear on what the website is for. A site meant to look credible for a local service business is a different job from a site meant to bring in leads every week, which is different again from an online store. Knowing which one you need keeps the conversation honest and stops you paying for things you will not use.
Write down, in plain words, what a visitor should be able to do on your site, and what you want the site to do for the business. That one paragraph is worth more than any feature list.
Questions worth asking
A good agency will welcome these. If the answers are vague, take note.
Will I own the website and be able to update it myself? You should never be locked to one agency. Ask whether the site is built on something you can run yourself, like WordPress, and whether you get full access at handover.
How will the site be built to show up on Google? A website that no one finds is money spent for nothing. Ask how they handle page titles, headings, site speed and structure, and whether they will show you the results in Google Search Console after launch.
Can I see work you have done for businesses like mine? Not just a portfolio of pretty screens, but real launched sites, ideally for businesses at your size and stage.
What happens after launch? Websites need updates, security, and small fixes. Find out what support looks like and what it costs, before you sign, not after.
Can I have the scope and price in writing? A clear written scope protects both sides. Be wary of a number quoted before anyone has understood what you need.
What to check yourself
You can judge a lot in ten minutes without any technical knowledge.
Open their own website on your phone. Is it fast? Does it look right on a small screen? An agency that cannot make its own site quick and tidy is telling you something.
Search for them. Do they show up for what they do, or only for their own name? A web company that cannot get itself found is a fair thing to question.
Read how they talk. Do they explain things in plain language, or hide behind jargon? You will be working with these people. Clear communication now usually means fewer surprises later.
Warning signs
A few things are worth slowing down for:
- A price quoted instantly, before anyone has asked what you need
- No clear answer on who owns the site and the hosting
- Promises of a guaranteed number one ranking on Google, which no honest agency can make
- A portfolio full of demos but no real, live, findable sites
- Pressure to decide today
Cheapest is rarely the real question
Price matters, and you should not overpay. But the most expensive mistake is not paying too much. It is paying anything for a site that does not get found and does not bring in enquiries. Judge on value, not just the number at the bottom of the quote. A slightly higher price for a site that actually works is the cheaper option in the end.
