A plumber under a sink cannot answer the phone. The caller does not leave a voicemail. They ring the next name on Google. For emergencies such as a burst pipe, a blocked toilet or no hot water, the first firm to reply usually gets the job.

Two other problems sit behind that. Quotes for non-emergency work take an evening to write, and unpaid invoices drift because chasing feels awkward. All three are message problems, and message problems are what automation is for.

Gas, licences and what we leave alone

Gas work needs a registered engineer in many places, such as Gas Safe in Great Britain and state licences in Australia and the US. Water, backflow and drainage work can also be regulated. Your reply templates should show your licence or registration number and say whether a job needs a particular registration. The accuracy of those details is yours to confirm with your licensing body.

If a caller mentions a gas smell, the message must tell them to leave the property and call the gas emergency number for their area. We use wording that your safety lead approves, and the flow flags that case to a person immediately. Texts need consent in many countries, and customer addresses are personal data. Check with your adviser.
