AI voice agents for startups
AI receptionist for startups
A founder's mobile number on the website is a poor business line. A small voice agent can answer, route and book without a hire, and it can be built in stages as the company grows.

In short
An AI receptionist for a startup gives the company a business phone line that answers every call, takes messages, books calls with the founders and routes the occasional customer or investor to the right person. It is built small and extended later. Liftup Technologies scopes it to your stage, with a fixed quote after a short call.
The founder-as-switchboard problem
Early teams give out a founder's mobile number or a cheap VoIP line that rings nowhere. Calls come in from customers, suppliers, recruiters, investors and cold sellers. Founders answer in meetings, during travel and at night, or they miss the call that matters. A missed call from a prospective customer or a would-be partner does not come back. There is also a quieter cost: a founder who stops mid-task to answer every call loses an hour of focus each time, and a founder who ignores them loses the call.
This is a different problem from the one covered on our SaaS voice agent page, which is aimed at companies with a sales team. Here the aim is to look professional and capture every call with little overhead. The general approach is on our AI voice agent development page.
What to build at each stage
| Stage | Phone problem | What we would build | What to leave out |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pre-launch | No business line, founders' phones in use | A number that answers, says what the company does, takes a message and emails a summary | Integrations and outbound calls |
| First customers | Customers ring with questions, some during the work day | Answers from a short FAQ, books a call in a founder's calendar, flags urgent issues | Complex account lookups |
| Seed to Series A | Support and sales calls rising | Triage into sales, support and partner paths with CRM or helpdesk notes | Heavy custom logic until call volume justifies it |
| Scale | Phone is a real channel | Full inbound and outbound flows, analytics and multiple regions | Nothing |
Most startups should stay in the first two rows for a while. We would rather ship a small agent in a week and see what real callers ask than design a large one on guesses. After a few weeks of call summaries you will know whether the phone deserves more investment. The phone is rarely the biggest lever, and overbuilding it takes focus from the product.
Calls that should not go to the agent
- Investor calls. A founder should take these, and the agent should route them to a calendar link, not a script.
- Press and partnership requests, which are better handled by a person who can reply with context.
- Recruiter and vendor pitches, which can receive a short polite message and a pointer to email.
- Customers with an outage or a billing emergency, who should reach a human or a priority route.

A startup does not need a custom telephony stack. We typically use a managed phone provider, a speech-to-text and text-to-speech service, and a language model API from OpenAI or Anthropic, connected through a workflow tool such as n8n or Make. That keeps monthly running costs tied to call minutes, with no minimum contract beyond the provider terms. Everything sits in accounts you own, so you can move away without us. We hand over the script, the workflow and a short operating guide, and our AI vendor evaluation checklist is there if you want to compare us with other suppliers first.
Because phone laws differ by country, and because early-stage companies often sell across borders, we keep scripts honest: the agent says it is automated, recordings are off unless you add a notice, and outbound calls are not part of the first release. Check with your lawyer before you add them.
From idea to number in a few steps
- Pick the five callsList the five reasons someone phones you. Everything else goes to messages.
- Write the scriptOne page: greeting, what you do, what the agent can book, what it will not do.
- Connect your calendarFounders' calendars or a booking page.
- Run for a monthRead the summaries each week, then decide whether to extend.
Price
Our minimum project is $1,500, and our rate is $30 an hour. A startup business-line agent with messages, a calendar link and an FAQ is near that minimum. More paths, CRM links and outbound calls take more hours. A fixed quote comes within one working day of a short call. Telephony charges are paid to the provider. If you are unsure whether a voice agent or a chatbot suits you first, see AI chatbots for startups and the cost guide.

AI voice agent development: phone calls answered in natural speech, with a person on standby
A voice agent lives or dies on timing and on what it does when it does not understand. We design for both, and we are cautious about outbound calling.
Pricing guideHow much does an AI voice agent cost in 2026?
A voice agent is billed by the minute as well as built once. Price it in two parts: the build, and what every minute of talk costs to run.
