Mobile apps in New Zealand

Mobile app development for New Zealand businesses

iOS and Android apps for Kiwi teams and customers, built remotely from India. We plan for patchy rural coverage, store privacy forms, the Privacy Act 2020 and a release process you can follow.

In short

Liftup Technologies develops iOS and Android apps for New Zealand businesses using React Native or Flutter, working remotely from India. We cover design, build, testing, store submission and updates, with offline behavior for poor coverage and privacy disclosures that match the Privacy Act 2020. Calls fall in your afternoon. Who builds an app in New Zealand and why

Most Kiwi app projects fall into a few groups: a retailer or hospitality brand wanting repeat orders, a field-service team replacing paper forms, a tourism operator needing bookings and maps, or a startup testing a product aimed at New Zealand and then Australia. In each case the first question is whether an app is needed at all. A well-built mobile website or a progressive web app can be enough, and our PWA vs native comparison explains the trade-offs.

An app earns its place when it needs push notifications, camera or location access, offline use or a daily habit. If none of those apply, we say so on the first call and suggest a cheaper route.

Choosing how to build

ApproachGood fitWatch for
React Native or Flutter, one codebase for both storesMost business apps, MVPs and internal toolsHeavy device features may need native modules
Fully native (Swift and Kotlin)Graphics-heavy or hardware-intensive appsTwo codebases and higher cost
Progressive web appSimple content or booking toolsFewer device features, limited iOS support for some functions
Responsive web appBack-office tools used on desktopsNo store presence

For most New Zealand clients we suggest a single React Native or Flutter codebase, because it keeps both platforms in step and halves the number of releases to manage. The mobile app development service page lists what is included.

Coverage, speed and real-world use

New Zealand has excellent coverage in cities and weak or missing coverage in many rural valleys, national parks and offshore areas. Farms, forestry sites, construction projects and tramping routes all see dropouts. If your users work there, the app should keep working offline: save forms locally, queue uploads and sync when the signal returns, with clear messages about what has been sent.

Distance to servers also matters. We choose hosting regions close to New Zealand, such as Sydney, and we test on mid-range phones and slower connections, not only on the newest device in the office.

Privacy, store forms and consumer rules

An app collects personal information as soon as someone signs up, so the Privacy Act 2020 applies. The app needs a privacy statement, a plain description of what is collected and why, and a way for people to ask for their data or ask for corrections. Apple's App Store privacy labels and Google Play's data safety form must match what the app and its SDKs actually do. A mismatch can get an update rejected.

  • Ask for location, camera or contacts only when the feature needs it, and explain why at that moment.
  • Information privacy principle 12 covers disclosure of personal information outside New Zealand. Cloud services, analytics and our own team in India are all relevant, so we document where data goes. Ask your lawyer to confirm what applies.
  • In-app claims about price, stock or service are covered by the Fair Trading Act 1986, enforced by the Commerce Commission.
  • Push notifications and in-app marketing emails need consent under the Unsolicited Electronic Messages Act 2007.

How the project runs remotely

  1. Scope and wireframesThe core flow, user roles and what must work offline are agreed on paper before design.
  2. Design and prototypeA tappable prototype you can test with real users, such as your staff or regulars.
  3. Build in sprintsTest builds reach your phone through TestFlight and Google Play internal testing every week or two.
  4. Store submissionWe prepare listings, screenshots, privacy forms and age ratings under your developer accounts.
  5. Updates and careBug fixes and operating-system changes are handled in a short monthly plan if you want one.

New Zealand is 6.5 hours ahead of India in winter and 7.5 hours ahead during daylight saving. A 2 pm demo in Auckland is early morning for our team in Pune. We work remotely and have no New Zealand office.

Cost drivers

Projects start at $1,500 and our rate is $30 an hour, in US dollars. Price moves with the number of screens, user roles, integrations, offline sync, payments and admin tools. Developer accounts and store fees are paid by you directly to Apple and Google. See our web app cost guide for how scope maps to hours. Check with your accountant on how GST applies to a service from an overseas supplier.

Questions, answered

Do I need an iOS and an Android app?
Usually both, since Kiwi customers use both. With React Native or Flutter, one build serves both stores, which keeps cost and release work down.
Who owns the app and the store accounts?
You do. The Apple Developer and Google Play accounts are in your name, and the source code is handed over at launch.
Can the app work without a signal?
Yes, for the features that allow it. We save data locally and sync later, and we test in airplane mode with real tasks.
How long does an app take?
A focused first version often takes a couple of months. Complex apps take longer. Store review adds a few days, and the quote gives a timeline.
Can you add Apple Pay or card payments?
Yes, through providers such as Stripe, subject to their approval and your account. We check availability in New Zealand on the first call.
