AI agents for insurance

AI agents for insurance agencies: renewals and certificates

An independent agency lives on service volume: certificate requests, renewal reviews, endorsements and quotes that stall on missing details. We build agents that run the paperwork loop and leave the advice to your licensed people.

In short

An insurance agency AI agent reads client emails and forms, drafts certificate and endorsement requests, collects missing quote information, tracks renewals and logs notes in your agency management system. Liftup Technologies builds these agents so that coverage advice, binding and anything regulated stays with licensed staff. The agent handles the service desk work around the policy, not the policy decision.

Service work crowds out selling

A commercial lines account manager can spend half the day on small requests. A contractor needs a certificate of insurance for a new job by noon. A restaurant asks to add a vehicle. A client wants to know whether a claim is open. Each request needs a look-up in the agency system, sometimes a carrier portal, and a careful reply.

None of those tasks asks for a licence, but all of them carry risk if done sloppily: a certificate that lists the wrong additional insured is an error-and-omissions claim waiting to happen. That is why the design is cautious about what the agent may send.

Requests and how we route them

In every row the agent shows its sources, such as the policy document page it used, so the reviewer can check in seconds.

Systems, carriers and portals

Agencies commonly run management systems such as Applied Epic, AMS360 or HawkSoft. Integration routes range from official APIs to document and report exports, and carrier portals are often built for people rather than software. We do not scrape carrier portals against their terms. Where a portal blocks automation, the agent prepares the data and a person pastes it in.

Document reading is a large part of the work: dec pages, loss runs, acord-style forms and schedules. We build an extraction step that returns structured fields and marks confidence, and we test it against your real documents first. For related capabilities see AI document processing. If clients phone in for these requests, AI voice agents for insurance cover that channel.

Regulation and professional risk

  • Licensing: giving advice, recommending coverage or soliciting business is typically reserved for licensed individuals, and the rules differ by state, province and country. The agent is configured not to do any of those things. Confirm with your regulator or compliance adviser.
  • Errors and omissions: your E&O insurer may have views on automation. Tell them, and keep the action log, which also helps in a dispute about who was told what and when.
  • Customer data: policy and claims files contain financial and sometimes health information. US agencies should consider the FTC Safeguards Rule and state insurance data security laws, UK agencies the FCA's expectations and UK GDPR, and Irish and Australian agencies their respective regulators and privacy law.
  • Consumer treatment: in the UK, firms are expected to treat customers fairly and to deliver clear communications, so approve templates with your compliance lead.

Pilot, timeline and cost

  1. Sample 50 requestsWe classify a month of service mail and count the categories, so we pick the volume-heavy, low-risk type first.
  2. Draft onlyThe agent prepares replies and records. Account managers approve each one and mark the reason for edits.
  3. Measure errorsWe track wrong holder names, wrong dates and missing attachments, and refine until they fall below your threshold.
  4. Release selected typesLow-risk categories, such as invoice reminders, may be sent without review.

Projects start at $1,500, with work above that billed at $30 an hour. A certificate-request agent is a good small first project. Multi-carrier and multi-system builds cost more. Questions, answered

Can the agent recommend coverage?
No. Recommending coverage is advice and belongs to licensed staff. The agent can collect the facts a producer needs and list the questions still open.
Is it safe to let it issue certificates?
For standard holders with a clear template and a human spot check, many agencies are comfortable. For anything with custom wording or waivers, a person reviews first. Your policy and your E&O insurer decide.
Will it work with our management system?
Likely, through its API, report exports or email integration. We confirm on the first call and tell you if a connection would require a vendor fee.
What about commercial and personal lines?
Both work. We usually start with commercial service because the requests are more repetitive and the staff time is more expensive.
How do you protect client documents?
Files stay in your cloud account, agent access is limited per task and each document read is logged. Model providers are selected for their data terms.
