In short

Liftup Technologies builds AI chatbots for businesses in Japan, working remotely from India with calls booked in Japanese working hours. Each bot answers from your own documents using the OpenAI or Anthropic APIs, speaks Japanese at the politeness level you choose, runs on your website or LINE, and hands over to staff. Projects start at $1,500, with a fixed quote after a short call.

What a Japanese customer expects from a bot

Japanese customer service has a high bar for tone. A reply that is correct but too casual, or stiff in the wrong way, damages trust. A bot also has to cope with how people actually type: short fragments, mixed scripts, abbreviations, and sometimes an English product name in the middle of a Japanese sentence.

We build the bot around your approved content rather than the open internet. It answers from your product pages, price lists, FAQs, policies and manuals. When the answer is not in those sources, it says so and offers a human contact. That behavior is written into the instructions and tested before launch.

LINE is the main messaging app in Japan, so many projects start there or add it in the second phase. See the AI page for Japan for the wider picture.

Data, APPI and disclosure

Chatbots collect personal information: names, phone numbers, order details and whatever customers type. In Japan that falls under the Act on the Protection of Personal Information (APPI), overseen by the Personal Information Protection Commission. Sending that text to an AI provider outside Japan counts as handing data to a third party in another country, which has its own conditions. Your lawyer should confirm the legal basis and the privacy notice wording.

  • We mask or drop sensitive fields before text reaches the model where the use case allows it.
  • The chat window states that an AI is answering and links your privacy policy.
  • Logs are kept for a period you set, with access limited to named people.
  • Payment card numbers should never be typed into chat. The bot tells users where to pay.

Build process and testing

  1. Content auditWe list the documents the bot may use and mark anything it must never quote.
  2. PrototypeA working bot on a test link, with instructions written in Japanese at your chosen politeness level.
  3. Test setReal customer questions run through the bot, rated by a native reviewer from your team.
  4. Launch and reviewGo live on one channel, read the logs weekly for a month, fix gaps and decide whether to add LINE or another channel.

Our chatbot script template is a useful starting point for the opening message and hand-off rules.

Keeping answers accurate after launch

A chatbot is only as current as its sources. Prices change, campaigns end and policies are updated, so we agree an owner on your side for the source documents. When a document changes, the bot's knowledge is refreshed from the new version, and old versions are removed so it cannot quote them.

We also review conversations. In the first month, a weekly look at logs shows which questions were answered well, which went to a human and which were declined. Each pattern leads to a specific fix: a missing page, a clearer instruction or a new hand-off rule. We report the handled share, the hand-off share and the topics that need content, using your own logs, not invented benchmarks.

Peak periods and staffing hand-off

Japan has predictable busy and quiet periods: Golden Week, Obon, the year-end and New Year closures, and sale seasons. A bot is useful when the office is closed, but only if it tells customers honestly what happens next. We write holiday-aware messages, such as when a human will reply after the New Year break, and update them from a simple settings page your team can edit.

For urgent topics such as complaints, safety, billing disputes or medical questions, the bot stops answering and passes the case to staff with the conversation attached.

Working hours and price

Japan is 3.5 hours ahead of India. A call at 11:00 in Pune is 14:30 in Tokyo, so reviews fit comfortably into your afternoon. Work is remote, with weekly demos and one project lead. We do not have staff in Japan.

Projects start at $1,500, and our rate is $30 an hour. A fixed quote follows a short call on the contact page. Price depends on how many documents the bot reads, the number of channels, integrations with booking or order systems, and how much Japanese testing is needed. Model usage is billed by the provider on your own account. Try the AI chatbot cost calculator or read the chatbot cost guide. The generic method is on our AI chatbot development page.

Questions, answered

Can the chatbot speak formal Japanese?
Yes. We set the politeness level in the instructions, supply example replies in your brand voice and test with a native reviewer. You can ask for plain, polite or formal business Japanese.
Can it work on LINE?
Yes, through the LINE Messaging API with a LINE Official Account. Plan limits and message costs are set by LINE, and we explain them at scoping.
Will it make up answers?
We reduce the risk by limiting the bot to your documents and telling it to decline when sources are silent. Testing finds remaining gaps, but no AI system is perfect, so important cases go to a human.
Where does the customer data go?
To the model provider you choose, plus any logging service you approve. We document the flow, and your lawyer confirms the APPI position.
Can staff take over a conversation?
Yes. The bot can pass the thread to email, a shared inbox or a live-chat tool, with the conversation attached.
Do we own the bot?
You own the prompts, workflows, code and API accounts. We hand everything over in your accounts at launch.
