Hire SaaS developers

Hire a SaaS developer who builds for subscriptions

A SaaS product is a web app plus accounts, plans, billing and an admin side. Developers who have built only brochure sites often miss that. This page covers the skills and questions that matter.

In short

A SaaS developer builds subscription software: customer accounts, team roles, billing, usage limits and an admin area, on a design that keeps each customer's data separate. Check for experience with multi-tenancy, payments and security. Liftup Technologies works from Pune at $30 an hour, with projects from $1,500 and a fixed quote within one working day.

What makes SaaS development different

A normal website shows the same content to everyone. A SaaS product shows each customer their own data and must never mix them up. It also changes what a customer can do based on their plan, charges them on a schedule, and handles failed payments, upgrades and cancellations. These are the hard parts, and they are invisible in a demo.

Building blockWhat it involvesTypical mistake
Accounts and teamsSign-up, invites, roles, password reset, single sign-on laterRoles added late, forcing a rewrite
Tenant separationKeeping each customer's data apart in code and databaseA query that forgets the customer filter
BillingPlans, trials, invoices, tax, failed payment retriesHand-rolled billing logic
Usage limitsSeat counts, quotas, feature flags by planLimits checked only in the interface
Admin areaSupport tools, user lookup, refunds, audit trailLeft until a customer is stuck
Email and eventsWelcome, receipts, alerts, in-app noticesNo log of what was sent

Skills to look for

  • A mainstream web stack they can explain, such as Next.js with a managed database, or a similar choice.
  • Experience integrating a payment provider's subscription features. Stripe documents these on its site, and your developer should know them.
  • Habits around security: encrypted connections, hashed passwords, least-privilege access, dependency updates.
  • Automated tests on the parts that touch money and permissions.
  • A deployment process with a staging copy and a way to roll back.

If you are not yet sure what to build, an MVP can come first. Our hire an MVP developer guide covers that stage, and our SaaS development service shows how we approach the full product.

Choosing between team types

Many founders use an agency for the first version, then hire in-house once revenue supports it. If you do, insist that the first build is documented well enough for a new team to take over.

Interview questions

  1. How do you keep one customer's data from ever appearing for another?
  2. How will you handle plan upgrades, downgrades and failed card payments?
  3. What happens to a customer's data when they cancel?
  4. How would the system change if we reach ten times as many customers?
  5. Which parts will you test automatically before every release?
  6. Where will logs and errors go, and who gets alerted?
  7. What would you build later, not now?

Privacy and security duties depend on your customers and markets. If your users are in the EU or UK, or the product holds health or financial data, take legal advice early. Our GDPR website checklist is a start for the web side.

Ownership and contracts

The code repository, cloud accounts, domain, payment account and app store listings should all be in your company's name. Ask for infrastructure to be described in code or in a written setup note, so a new developer can recreate it.

Agree what happens after launch. SaaS products need ongoing work: fixes, upgrades to dependencies, new features and support. Decide whether that is a retainer, a block of hours or time and materials, and write it down.

Questions, answered

How much does a SaaS developer cost?
It depends on the route and the scope. Liftup charges $30 an hour with projects from $1,500 and a fixed quote after a short call. Billing, roles and integrations raise the effort.
Can I use a no-code tool for a SaaS?
For early tests, yes. As accounts, billing and data grow, no-code tools can become limits, so plan how you would move.
Which payment provider should we use?
Stripe is common and well documented, but the right choice depends on your markets and tax needs. Ask your developer to compare options for your countries.
Who handles security?
The developer builds in the basics, but you own the risk. Ask for a security review before launch and again as you grow.
Should the SaaS site and the product be separate?
Usually yes. A marketing site built for search and a product built for logged-in users have different needs and release speeds.
