Local SEO pricing
How much do local SEO services cost?
Published pricing studies do not split out local SEO, so the honest answer is a range with a method. Here is the market data and how to use it.
In short
Market data from Clutch puts the average SEO retainer at $3,199 a month and hourly rates at $100 to $149. Ahrefs found most agency retainers fall between $501 and $1,000 a month, with a mean of $3,209. Neither separates local SEO, so treat these as general benchmarks and compare quotes by scope.
What the market data says
No public source gives a clean figure for local SEO alone. The two studies below cover SEO as a whole. Local work is often scoped smaller than national work, so many local quotes fall below the averages, but the data does not prove that, so use it as a frame rather than a promise.
| Source (market data) | What it reports | Figure |
|---|---|---|
| Clutch SEO pricing guide | Average monthly retainer | $3,199 a month |
| Clutch SEO pricing guide | Typical hourly rate | $100 to $149 an hour |
| Ahrefs SEO pricing survey | Average agency monthly price | $3,209 a month |
| Ahrefs SEO pricing survey | Most common monthly band | $501 to $1,000 a month |
The gap between an average above $3,000 and a most common band of $501 to $1,000 shows how skewed the market is. A few large engagements raise the mean. The most common band is the better guide for a single-location small business.
A simple way to build a local budget
Hourly rates make scope visible. Multiply the hours you need by the market range. These numbers are arithmetic on the Clutch hourly range, not quotes.
| Monthly hours | At $100 an hour | At $149 an hour | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5 | $500 | $745 | Profile upkeep, review replies, light reporting |
| 10 | $1,000 | $1,490 | Profile, citations, one page update a month |
| 20 | $2,000 | $2,980 | Active content, link outreach, several services or areas |
Multi-location work scales with the number of branches because each needs its own profile, page and review process. Ask how the hours per location are set rather than accepting one flat figure for a chain.
Three ways agencies charge
| Model | How it works | Fits when |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly retainer | A fixed monthly fee for an agreed list of tasks and reporting | Ongoing work in a competitive market |
| Hourly | You pay for time used, often with a monthly cap | Small or irregular needs |
| One-time project | A fixed fee for a cleanup, such as profile repair, duplicate removal and location page build | A business that can run the habits itself afterward |
What should be inside a local SEO quote
- Google Business Profile setup or repair, category and service review.
- Citation and listing cleanup, with a named list of directories.
- Location page build or improvement, with schema.
- Review process: request template, reply policy, monitoring.
- Reporting: calls, direction requests, website clicks, leads, and what changed each month.
- Who owns the accounts. The profile and analytics should be yours, with the agency as a manager, not the owner.
Comparing three quotes: a worked example
Say a dental practice with two clinics receives three proposals. The scopes below are invented to show the method. The fee column is left blank on purpose, because the point is to compare what is inside before you compare price.
| Item | Quote A | Quote B | Quote C |
|---|---|---|---|
| Profiles managed | 2 | 2 | 1 |
| Location pages | Rewritten | Not included | Rewritten |
| Review process | Template and monthly replies | None | Template only |
| Reporting | Calls and directions | Rankings only | Calls, directions, leads |
| Account ownership | Client | Agency | Client |
Quote C covers one clinic only, so its price is not comparable until you add the second. Quote B leaves out pages and reviews, and keeps the accounts. Quote A is the only one that covers both sites with client-owned accounts. Price per covered deliverable, not total price, tells you which is cheaper.
Red flags in a quote
- A promise of a specific ranking or a first-page position.
- No named deliverables, only 'optimization'.
- A package that buys reviews or creates extra profiles.
- Pricing per 'citation' with hundreds of directories listed.
- Refusal to give you admin access to your own profile.
- Reports that show only keyword positions, with no calls or leads.
Cheaper options, and when not to hire at all
If you run one location and have time, the first thirty days of work in how to do local SEO cost nothing but effort. A one-time cleanup may be enough. Hire monthly help when the market is crowded, you have many branches, or nobody can reply to reviews and keep the profile current.
We do not publish prices for our own work. For local SEO services you get a fixed quote after a short call, based on the number of locations and the starting state of your profiles.
