AEO
Answer engine optimization (AEO) for pages that get quoted
AEO is writing and structuring pages so a search feature or an assistant can lift one clear answer from them and credit you.
In short
Answer engine optimization (AEO) is shaping your pages so search features and AI assistants can extract a short, correct answer and attribute it to you. Liftup mines real questions from Search Console, writes a 40 to 70 word answer block for each, adds supporting evidence and the right markup, then watches which answers get picked up.
What AEO is, and how it differs from the rest of SEO
Classic SEO asks whether a page ranks. AEO asks whether a single passage on that page can stand alone as the answer. Featured snippets, People Also Ask boxes, Google's AI summaries and chat assistants all work by lifting a passage and presenting it. A page that buries its answer under three paragraphs of introduction loses to one that opens with it.
The related service generative engine optimization is about your brand being known and mentioned. AEO is narrower and more mechanical: the wording, order and markup of the answer itself. Our umbrella page on AI search optimization shows how the pieces fit.
A before and after, line by line
Here is the kind of rewrite we do. The topic is a question a dental clinic gets all the time. The text below is an invented sample to show the method, not a client page.
| Before | After | |
|---|---|---|
| Opening | We understand that choosing a dentist can feel overwhelming and that every patient is unique. | A routine dental cleaning takes about 30 to 45 minutes and is usually repeated every six months. |
| Where the answer sits | Fourth paragraph | First sentence under the heading |
| Heading | Our approach to hygiene | How long does a dental cleaning take? |
| Supporting detail | Mixed into long paragraphs | Three short bullets: what happens, what affects the time, when to book more often |
| Proof | None | Named clinician as author, date reviewed, link to the professional body guidance |
Notice that the answer is useful even if no one reads further. That is the test we apply: if an assistant quoted only this passage, would the reader be correctly informed and know who said it?
Answer format by question type
| Question type | Format | Length | Markup |
|---|---|---|---|
| What is X | One-sentence definition, then context | 40 to 60 words | Article or WebPage |
| How do I do X | Numbered steps | 5 to 9 steps | HowTo only if the page truly is a tutorial |
| X vs Y | Comparison table with a verdict row | 4 to 8 rows | None needed; the table is the signal |
| How much / how long | Range with the main variable named | 30 to 50 words | None needed |
| Which one / what is the right way | Short recommendation by situation | 3 to 4 lines | None needed |
| Where / near me | Address, hours, service area | Structured block | LocalBusiness |
Be careful with FAQ markup. Google limited FAQ rich results to a small set of authoritative government and health sites in 2023, so adding it will not earn most businesses a visible result. We still write the question-and-answer content, because assistants read the text, but we do not sell the markup as a benefit.

- Mine the questionsWe export queries from your Google Search Console, filter for questions and long phrases, and add what comes from People Also Ask and your sales and support inboxes.
- Match each question to one pageNo two pages should answer the same question, or they compete. Gaps become new pages.
- Write the answer blockA direct answer of 40 to 70 words placed under a heading phrased as the question, followed by evidence.
- Add structure and proofTables, lists, named author, review date, sources, and the markup that truly applies.
- Check retrievalWe test the target question in search and in two or three assistants before and after publishing.
- Review quarterlyAnswers go stale. Dates, prices and rules get rechecked on a schedule.
What you get
- A question map: every target question, its page, its current answer and our proposed answer
- Rewritten or new pages with answer blocks, tables and sources
- Schema markup where it applies, validated before release
- A tracking sheet showing, per question, whether you hold a snippet or are cited in an assistant
- A review calendar for pages that need updating
You get a fixed quote after a short call. Tell us which questions your buyers ask most through the contact page.
Timeline and reporting
For a site with 15 to 20 priority pages, planning estimates are two weeks for the question map and four to six weeks for rewrites. Search features update as pages are recrawled, which can take days or weeks. Assistants are slower and less predictable.
Reporting comes from your Google Search Console for impressions, clicks and click-through rate on the rewritten pages, plus the question tracker for snippets and citations. One caution: a page that wins an answer box can lose clicks while gaining visibility. We report both so you can see the trade.
Related work
We have no case study yet that isolates AEO. The nearest examples are content-heavy sites where clear answers were the point, such as the patient-facing program and consultation pages we built for MVR LSM Clinic and the product pages for Asian Packaging. We built those websites, and we make no claim about their search results here.
