International SEO

International SEO: one site, several countries, no cannibalization

Selling in more than one country or language means search engines must know which page belongs to which audience. We set that up and prove it works.

In short

International SEO structures a website so search engines show the right version to people in each country and language. Liftup chooses a URL structure, implements hreflang annotations, localizes content rather than just translating it, fixes duplicate-content and currency issues, and reports clicks and impressions per market from your own Google Search Console.

Country, language or both?

The first decision is what you are really targeting. Language targeting means one page for everyone who reads Spanish. Country targeting means different pages for Spain and Mexico because prices, shipping, spelling, laws or products differ. Many sites need a mix: English for the USA, UK, Ireland and Australia, each with its own currency and legal wording, plus German and French for the EU.

English variants are the most common trap. Pages for the USA and the UK may differ only by spelling and price, so they look duplicate to a crawler. Hreflang tells Google these are intentional alternates, but it does not fix thin or identical pages. Real local content does.

URL structure options compared

StructureExampleGood forWatch out for
Country domainsbrand.co.uk, brand.com.auStrong local signal, separate legal entitiesEach domain builds authority separately; more to maintain
Subdomainsuk.brand.comSeparate hosting or teamsTreated as separate sites in some respects; weaker shared authority
Subfoldersbrand.com/uk/, brand.com/de/Most businesses starting outNeeds clean hreflang and a plan for the default version
Parameters or cookiesbrand.com?lang=deNobodySearch engines cannot reliably index them; avoid

For most companies we recommend subfolders on one domain, because authority is shared and the setup is simpler. Country domains make sense when you have local entities, local hosting needs or very different brands. Switching later is expensive because every URL changes, so we decide this at the start.

What hreflang looks like in practice

Hreflang is a set of annotations on each page that list every alternate version. Each page must reference itself and every alternate, and every alternate must link back. Missing return links are the most common error we find.

German, Germanyde-de/de/

Language codes come first, then the optional country code. A value like en-uk is wrong, because the country code for the United Kingdom is GB. We validate every annotation by crawl, and our hreflang generator can produce the tags for a simple site.

How we work

  1. Market and demand checkWe look at your existing Search Console data by country, then size demand in each target market. Some markets are not worth a separate version yet.
  2. Choose the structureDomain, subdomain or subfolder, with the reasons written down and the migration risks listed.
  3. Localize, not just translateSpelling, currency, units, legal pages, shipping, contact details and the words people actually search. We use native-speaking editors for non-English languages.
  4. Implement hreflang and canonicalsIn the page head or the sitemap, whichever suits your platform, with self-referencing canonicals on each version.
  5. Handle the rules by regionCookie consent and ePrivacy for the EU and UK, the Australian Privacy Act, and California rules for US visitors, so tracking does not distort the data.
  6. Verify and monitorWe check that the right country page appears in the right search results, by running searches from the target market and reading Search Console.

What you get

  • A market-by-market plan with the structure decision explained
  • Hreflang implemented and validated by crawl
  • A localization brief for each market: terms, currency, tone, legal wording
  • Fixes for duplicate content, redirects and geolocation redirects that block crawlers
  • Search Console properties set up per market, with a monthly report

The quote is fixed, and comes after a short call. Start at contact.

Timeline and reporting

Planning and structure take two to three weeks. Implementation depends on your platform and the number of markets, usually four to eight weeks for a first wave of three or four versions. Search engines then take time to recrawl and swap the right versions into results, so we judge success after about three months.

Our head office is in Pune, with offices in Coventry and New York, and we agree call times that fall inside your working day. Monthly reports use your Search Console, filtered by country and folder, so each market has its own impressions, clicks and top pages.

Related projects

Two projects touch this area. Ajyal Al Mustakbal Center needed a bilingual Arabic and English website with smooth language switching, which is the layout and right-to-left side of multi-language work. Ajyal Coaching is a Dubai SAT and language institute whose site serves students and parents in the UAE and beyond. Both were website builds, and we do not claim international search results for them.

Questions, answered

Do I need hreflang if my content is only in English?
If you serve several English-speaking countries with different prices, spelling or legal terms, yes. If the pages are identical, you may be better off with one global version.
Should I redirect visitors by their location?
Avoid forced redirects. Search crawlers often come from the USA and would never see your other versions. Show a banner that suggests the local version and let the visitor choose.
Is machine translation acceptable?
As a first draft for low-risk pages, with a native editor reviewing. Unreviewed machine translation produces awkward wording that hurts trust and conversions.
Which country should be x-default?
The version for visitors who match none of your targets. It is often the main English page or a language selector.
Can you expand us into the EU?
We can plan the search side. For data rules, check with a lawyer about GDPR obligations. We cover the technical consent setup so your analytics stay accurate.
