SEO comparison
AEO vs SEO: the real difference
SEO decides whether your page is found. AEO decides whether a short piece of it gets lifted out and read aloud, quoted or summarized.
In short
SEO earns rankings and clicks across the whole results page. AEO, answer engine optimization, shapes individual pages so engines can lift a short, accurate answer for snippets, voice assistants and AI answers. AEO sits on top of SEO, because a page that is not crawled, indexed and trusted never gets quoted. Do the SEO foundation first, then add AEO to your strongest questions.
Two goals on one foundation
Search engine optimization is the broad job: make your site crawlable, fast and relevant, build authority, and earn a place for many queries. The reward is a ranking, then a click.
Answer engine optimization is narrower. It takes one question a buyer asks and makes the page answer it so cleanly that an engine can copy the answer without rewriting it. The reward may be a featured snippet, a spoken answer or a citation inside an AI response, and sometimes the reader never clicks.
That last point is why AEO exists. When more questions end on the results page, being the quoted source matters even when the visit never happens. The glossary entry on zero-click search explains the pattern.
Side-by-side table
| SEO | AEO | |
|---|---|---|
| Main goal | Rank and earn clicks | Be the quoted answer |
| Unit of work | Whole site, template, topic | One question and one passage |
| Typical win | Position 3 for a service keyword | Featured snippet or AI citation for a question |
| Page style | Complete coverage of a topic | Direct answer first, detail after |
| Technical focus | Crawl, index, speed, links | Clean headings, lists, tables, matching schema |
| Main metric | Clicks, rankings, conversions | Impressions on question queries, citations, snippet ownership |
| Time to see movement | Months | Weeks for snippets, uncertain for AI answers |
| Risk if done alone | Low | High: no foundation means nothing to quote |
What AEO changes on a page
- Pick a real questionUse the exact wording from Search Console queries, support tickets or sales calls, not a guess.
- Answer in the first 40 to 60 wordsState the answer plainly under the heading. A reader or an engine should not need the next paragraph to understand it.
- Add the evidence belowFollow with steps, a table or a short list. Engines favor passages that are complete without the surrounding text.
- Name things consistentlyUse the same product, place and brand names everywhere so an engine can tie the passage to the right entity.
- Match schema to what is visibleAdd structured data only for content that appears on the page. See the schema markup checklist.
A worked example: one sentence, rewritten
Take a page that answers the question: how long does a Shopify store migration take. Here is the opening before and after an AEO pass.
| Version | Opening text |
|---|---|
| Before | Moving platforms is a big decision and every store is different. Many merchants wonder about the process, so in this article we will look at what is involved. |
| After | A typical Shopify migration takes two to six weeks, depending on how many products, redirects and apps the store has. Most of that time goes to data cleanup and testing, not building. |
The second version is quotable on its own, states a range, and names the factors that move it. Nothing was added except directness. The ranking work, such as links and internal linking, stays the same.
The two to six week range above is an illustration of the writing style, not a Liftup promise. Your own page should state what you can support.
When SEO wins and when AEO wins
- SEO first: a new site, a site with indexing problems, or a topic where you have no pages yet.
- SEO first: any business that needs form fills or purchases, since those need a visit.
- AEO next: you already rank on page one for many terms and want to own the answer boxes above you.
- AEO next: your buyers ask long, specific questions, as in healthcare, finance, software and B2B services.
- Both together: an established content site where questions drive a large share of impressions.
A site with technical problems gains little from AEO. Fix crawling and indexing first, as covered in our technical SEO service.
How we measure each one
We report SEO work from the client's own Google Search Console. For AEO we use the same data. Filter queries that begin with how, what, why, can or does, then watch impressions and click-through rate on those pages before and after the rewrite.
Citations in AI answers are harder to count, and no tool measures them perfectly. Treat any such number as a sample, not a total. We would rather show you five confirmed citations than an invented score.
What it costs to add AEO later
Little, if the SEO work was done properly. AEO is mostly editing: tightening openings, adding a table or a short list, and fixing headings on pages that already rank. It is cheap to add and easy to undo.
The expensive mistake is the reverse, paying for answer-style content on a site that Google cannot crawl cleanly. If you want a view of where your site stands, start with an SEO audit or contact us for a fixed quote.
