AI search terms
GEO vs AEO: the real difference
The two terms get used as if they were the same thing. They overlap a lot, but they aim at different surfaces and are checked in different ways.
In short
AEO, answer engine optimization, makes a page easy to lift as a direct answer in snippets, voice results and AI answer boxes. GEO, generative engine optimization, aims to get your brand cited or named inside answers written by tools such as ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini. Most work helps both. Treat AEO as page-level writing and GEO as brand-level presence.
Where the two terms come from
Answer engine optimization grew from the older featured-snippet and voice-search work. The target is a single passage that answers a single question. Generative engine optimization appeared after chat tools began writing synthesized answers from many sources. The target there is whether your name, page or data shows up in that synthesis at all.
Vendors and consultants use the labels loosely, and some use them interchangeably. We keep them apart because the checks differ, and a clear check is what keeps the work honest. Our service pages for AEO and GEO describe each in practice, and the AI search optimization page covers the combined job.
Side-by-side table
| AEO | GEO | |
|---|---|---|
| Surface it aims at | Featured snippets, People Also Ask, voice assistants, answer boxes | ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot and AI Overviews |
| What counts as success | Your passage is the quoted answer | Your brand or page is named or cited in the generated answer |
| Level of work | One page, one question | Whole site plus the web around it |
| Main levers | Direct answers, headings, lists, tables, schema | Clear entity facts, trusted mentions elsewhere, crawler access, original data |
| How you check | Search Console impressions and snippet ownership | Sampled prompts, referral traffic from AI tools, citation notes |
| How stable the result is | Fairly stable once a snippet is won | Varies from prompt to prompt and day to day |
| What can you control directly | Most of it | Part of it: you cannot edit a model's output |
One page, treated both ways
Take an FAQ page for a software company called Northwind (a made-up name for illustration). It answers: does the product support single sign-on.
- The AEO passPut the answer first: yes, on the Business plan, with SAML and OpenID Connect. Follow with a short table of supported providers. Mark up the question with matching FAQ structured data.
- The GEO passMake sure the same fact appears consistently on the pricing page, the docs and the product listing, so a model reading any of them finds the same answer. Check robots.txt allows the AI search crawlers you want.
- The off-page checkLook at how review sites, comparison articles and community threads describe SSO support. If they say something wrong, a model may repeat it. Correct what you can reach.
- The testAsk three AI tools the question five times each. Note who is cited, what they say and whether it is accurate.
The first step is AEO. The second to fourth are GEO. The same fact serves both, which is why most teams do them together.
Where the tactics split
- Only AEO cares about the exact position of the answer on the page and the length of the opening passage.
- Only GEO cares much about mentions on other sites, because models learn what a brand is from the wider web.
- Only GEO needs a deliberate decision about AI crawlers, covered in llms.txt vs robots.txt.
- Both need a clean technical base: crawlable, fast, indexed pages with unambiguous titles.
- Both reward original facts, such as your own survey, price table or process, that nobody else can supply.
Which one should you start with
| If you are | Start with | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| A business whose buyers ask many specific questions | AEO | Quick, measurable edits to pages that already exist |
| A brand compared often by name in AI tools | GEO | Your reputation across the web is what gets repeated |
| A new site with little indexed content | Neither yet: core SEO | There is nothing to quote or cite |
| An ecommerce brand with a small catalog | AEO on product and care pages, then GEO | Buying questions are specific and answerable |
| A professional service firm | GEO and local trust signals | Recommendations from AI tools lean on reputation |
Projects we have built, such as the online stores for Blume and A'YUCO, are the kind of sites where product and care questions are both specific and common. That makes the page-level AEO work a natural first step before wider GEO.
What it costs to do one before the other
Almost nothing is wasted. Direct, well-structured pages help GEO, and clear entity facts help AEO. The only real waste is buying a GEO program for a site with no indexed pages, or an AEO rewrite of pages that are blocked from crawling.
We reduce the risk by auditing first, then ranking the fixes by effort and likely effect. If you want that applied to your site, contact us. You get a fixed quote after a short call.
