How to rank in ChatGPT

ChatGPT does not publish a results page with positions one to ten. Appearing in its answers is a different goal, and it has its own checklist.

In short

You do not rank in ChatGPT the way you rank on Google. When it uses search, it chooses a handful of pages to read and cite. To be chosen, let OAI-SearchBot crawl your site, be indexable in ordinary search, answer questions directly near the top of the page and be described consistently across the web.

What 'ranking' means here

On Google you can look up a keyword and see that you sit at position four. ChatGPT gives each person a written answer, sometimes with source links, and the answer changes with wording, location and history. So there is no single position to report.

What you can track is presence: how often your brand is named, how often your page is linked and which prompts trigger it. Think of it as share of voice across a set of questions rather than a rank.

The three OpenAI crawlers

OpenAI documents separate user agents. Mixing them up is a common reason sites vanish from ChatGPT search or give up control they meant to keep.

CrawlerPurposeIf blocked
OAI-SearchBotFinds and indexes pages for ChatGPT search resultsYour pages are less likely to appear in search answers
GPTBotCollects content that may be used to train modelsOpts the site out of training use; does not remove you from search
ChatGPT-UserFetches a page when a user or custom GPT asks for itChatGPT cannot open your page on request

Review your robots.txt and any bot protection on your host. Many firewalls block unknown crawlers by default.

A five-step plan

  1. Make the site crawlable and fastFix broken pages, redirect chains and slow templates. Serve the main text in the HTML itself rather than waiting for JavaScript to build it.
  2. List the questions you want to answerTake them from sales calls, support tickets and Search Console queries. Aim for specific questions such as 'how long does a loft conversion take in Ireland', not broad topics.
  3. Give each question a page with a direct answerPut a 40 to 70 word answer under the heading, then supporting steps, a table or a worked example.
  4. Build the outside pictureGet your name and category stated consistently on directories, press and partner pages.
  5. Test, log and adjustRun a fixed set of prompts monthly and record whether you were named or linked.

A realistic timeline

PeriodWhat you can expectWhat to do
Week 1Nothing visible yetAllow crawlers, fix the worst technical issues, baseline 20 prompts
Weeks 2 to 4New or updated pages get fetchedPublish answer pages; check server logs for OAI-SearchBot visits
Months 2 to 3First links or mentions on narrow questionsAdd comparison and data pages; earn third-party mentions
Month 4 onwardPatterns become measurableCompare mention rate by prompt group and double down

These are planning ranges from how crawling and publishing usually work, not promises. A site that is already well indexed will move faster than a new one.

What to measure each month

Keep the report short so you actually produce it. Four numbers are enough: the share of your fixed prompts where the brand is named, the share where a page of yours is linked, the number of OAI-SearchBot hits in your server logs and the count of sessions from chatgpt.com in analytics.

Read them together. Crawler hits rising while mentions stay flat usually means the pages are being read but are not yet the clearest answer. Mentions rising with no crawler hits points to outside coverage doing the work. Neither is a verdict, only a prompt for the next fix.

Pitfalls

  • Hunting for a ranking tool that reports your position. Any single number is a guess because answers vary between users.
  • Treating this as separate from SEO. Pages that are not indexed by traditional search engines are rarely found by AI search either.
  • Hiding facts in PDFs, images or tabs that load late.
  • Publishing dozens of thin pages with the same sentences. Quality of the answer matters more than the count.
  • Reading your analytics wrongly. Some AI visits arrive without a referrer, so also watch branded search growth.

Questions, answered

Is there a ChatGPT ranking factor list?
OpenAI has not published one. What exists is guidance on crawlers plus observation of which pages get cited. Treat claims of an exact formula with suspicion.
Do I need to be on page one of Google first?
Not strictly, but pages that are well indexed and clear tend to be easier for any search system to use. Start with the same fundamentals.
Does llms.txt help?
It is a proposed convention. We could find no statement from OpenAI that ChatGPT uses it, so do not rely on it. It is cheap to add if you want to.
How can I see whether ChatGPT visits my site?
Check your server or CDN logs for the OAI-SearchBot user agent, and filter analytics for sessions that come from chatgpt.com.
Can a small local business show up?
Yes, particularly for specific local and niche questions. See the guide on ranking a business on ChatGPT for that case.
