SEO for Claude: how to make your site visible in Claude answers

There is no Claude ranking formula. There are crawler rules, page structure and brand signals you can control.

In short

To appear in Claude answers, let Anthropic's crawlers reach your pages, keep key facts in server-rendered text, write short self-contained answer passages, and earn mentions on other trusted sites. Then test by asking Claude your buyers' questions on a schedule. No one can promise a citation, and results vary from run to run.

What SEO for Claude actually covers

People searching for this phrase usually mean one of two things. Either they want their business to show up when someone asks Claude a question, or they want to use Claude to do SEO work faster. This page covers the first in depth and the second briefly near the end.

Claude answers from its training and, when web search is on, from pages it fetches live. You cannot edit the training data. What you can control is whether your pages are reachable, readable and worth quoting at the moment it looks. That is closer to classic technical SEO plus good writing than to any new trick. For the wider picture, read our guide to SEO for LLMs.

Step 1: decide which Anthropic crawler you want to allow

Anthropic documents separate user agents, and each one can be allowed or blocked on its own line in robots.txt. Check Anthropic's help pages for the current list before you edit, because the names and purposes can change.

User agentPurpose as Anthropic describes itIf you block it
ClaudeBotCollects public web content that may be used to train modelsYour pages are less likely to inform future model training
Claude-UserFetches a page when a person asks Claude to look at it or searchClaude may be unable to read your page during a live answer
Claude-SearchBotIndexes pages to improve the quality of search results inside ClaudeYour pages may be left out of Claude's search results

A common mistake is blocking everything with a rule written for training and then wondering why Claude never mentions the brand. If your goal is visibility in answers, the second and third lines matter most. Whether to allow training is a separate business decision, so make it deliberately.

Step 2: make the answer easy to extract

  1. Serve the facts as HTML textPrices, service areas, specifications and definitions should be in the page source, not loaded only after JavaScript runs or locked inside images and PDFs.
  2. Lead with the answerUnder each heading, give the direct answer in the first one or two sentences, then the detail. A passage that makes sense on its own is easier to quote.
  3. Name things consistentlyUse the same company name, product names and author names on every page. Add an about page and an author line so there is a real entity behind the content.
  4. Add structured data that matches the pageOrganization, Article, FAQ-style content and product markup help machines classify a page. Markup must describe what is visible, not what you wish were there.
  5. Keep pages currentShow a last updated date that you change only when the content changes. Stale numbers are a reason for any assistant to skip a source.

Step 3: earn the mentions Claude sees elsewhere

AI answers tend to repeat what the wider web says about a brand. If your name appears only on your own site, there is little for an assistant to cross-check. Directories in your industry, trade press, partner pages, podcasts and real customer reviews all add independent evidence.

This is slow work and it overlaps with ordinary link building and digital PR. The difference is the target: a mention that says what you do, in plain words, is worth more here than a link with vague anchor text.

How to test whether Claude names you

Write ten questions a buyer would ask, such as which suppliers or providers suit a given need in a given country. Ask each one in Claude with web search on, once a week, and record three things: whether your brand appeared, which URLs were cited, and which competitors were named.

Run the same list every time and keep the log in a spreadsheet. Answers change between runs, so look at the pattern over a month, not one result. Also check your server logs for the user agents above and your analytics for referral visits from claude.ai. Our AI visibility checker and GEO checklist cover the same tests in more detail.

Using Claude for your own SEO work

Claude is useful for grouping keywords by intent, drafting title options, writing regular expressions for Search Console filters and summarizing a crawl export. It is not a source of search volumes or rankings, and it can state wrong facts with confidence. Check anything that will be published. For a comparison of assistants, see ChatGPT vs Claude.

Pitfalls to avoid

  • Paying anyone who promises a Claude ranking. No public ranking system exists to rank in.
  • Treating llms.txt as a switch. It is cheap to add, but no one has shown it controls citations.
  • Stuffing pages with questions and answers that no buyer asked.
  • Measuring after one prompt. One answer is an anecdote, not a result.

Questions, answered

Is there a way to rank first in Claude?
No. Claude does not publish a ranking list. You can make your pages crawlable, clear and well supported by other sources, then measure how often you are named over several weeks.
Should I block ClaudeBot?
That depends on whether you are comfortable with your content being used for training. Blocking it does not stop the separate agents that fetch pages for live answers, so decide each rule on its own.
Does Claude use Google rankings?
Claude retrieves pages through its own search tooling, so a high Google position is not the same as being cited. Strong pages that rank well and are easy to read tend to help in both places.
Does schema markup help Claude?
It helps machines understand what a page is, which can support any system that reads it. It is not a documented requirement for Claude, so treat it as clarity rather than a lever.
How do I see Claude traffic in analytics?
Look for referral visits from claude.ai in your analytics, and for the Anthropic user agents in server logs. Many answers produce no click, so absence of visits does not prove you were not mentioned.
