SEO for agents
SEO for agents: what it means and what to do first
People search this phrase for two different reasons. Some run an agency of human agents, such as real estate or insurance. Others want their site to work for AI agents that browse on a buyer's behalf.
In short
SEO for agents means one of two things. For human agents such as real estate, insurance or travel agents, it is local SEO: a Google Business Profile, area and product pages, and reviews. For AI agents that browse sites, it means clean HTML, labeled forms, stable URLs and crawler rules that allow them in.
Which meaning applies to you
| Meaning | Who asks | Where visitors come from | First job |
|---|---|---|---|
| Human agents (real estate, insurance, travel, recruitment) | Individual agents and small agencies | Google searches with a place or product in them, plus Maps | Profile, area pages and reviews |
| AI agents (software that browses and acts for a user) | Site owners with forms, bookings or catalogs | Assistants that open pages, read them and fill in forms | Readable pages, labeled controls, permission in robots.txt |
Many sites need both. An insurance agency wants local searchers to find it today, and wants an assistant that is asked to compare quotes to be able to read its pages tomorrow. The first is the bigger source of enquiries for most agencies, so start there.
SEO for human agents: the page set
A common mistake is a single home page with a list of services. Searchers type specifics, and one page cannot answer all of them. Here is a page set for an independent insurance agent covering one county:
| Page | Search it serves | What must be on it |
|---|---|---|
| Home | Agent name, insurance agent near me | Services, area, license numbers, one phone number, one form |
| One page per product | Home insurance quote, small business insurance | Who it suits, what affects the quote, which carriers you place with, a short quote form |
| One page per town served | Insurance agent in a named town | Real local detail: offices or meeting places, local risks, client situations you handle |
| Claims help | How to file a claim with a named carrier | Steps and phone numbers from the carrier, plus what you do for the client |
| Agent profile | Name searches from referrals | Photo, license, specialties, years in practice as stated by the agent |
A real estate agent follows the same logic with neighborhood guides, recent sales write-ups and a page for each property type. One technical trap: listings pulled in through an iframe usually count as the other provider's content, not yours, so your own neighborhood and market pages carry the ranking weight.
Steps for human agents
- Claim and complete the Google Business ProfileUse the exact business name, the correct categories, service areas and hours. Agents who work from home can hide the address and list the areas they serve.
- Build the page set aboveStart with the two products or property types that bring the most income, then add towns.
- Ask for reviews after every closed dealSend the review link the same week. Ask for the specifics a future client would care about, such as speed and clarity.
- Keep details identical everywhereName, address or service area and phone number should match across the site, profile, directories and social accounts.
- Track enquiries, not visitsCount calls and form submissions by source in Search Console and analytics, then compare month to month.

SEO for AI agents that browse your site
An AI agent reads a page much as a screen reader does. It looks at the HTML text and the labels on buttons and fields, then decides what to click. Sites that are friendly to keyboard users and screen readers tend to be friendly to agents too.
- Put the important text in the HTML rather than in images or content that appears only after scrolling or clicking.
- Label every form field and button with plain words. 'Submit' tells nothing, 'Request a quote' does.
- Use real links with stable URLs for products, plans and contact steps, not scripts that change the page without changing the address.
- State prices, availability and policies in text that sits near the thing they describe.
- Check robots.txt and any firewall rules. Some bot protection tools block automated visitors by default, which also blocks agents acting for real customers.
A fast test: open the page, unplug the mouse and complete the main task with the keyboard only. If you get stuck, an agent probably will too.
Pitfalls
- Creating twenty town pages with the same text and a swapped place name. Google treats thin copies as low value, and clients can tell.
- Listing a service area you do not serve, which can trigger profile suspensions.
- Allowing every bot without a plan. Decide which crawlers you want, then write rules for each one.
- Treating AI agent readiness as separate from accessibility. Fix accessibility problems first and most agent problems disappear.
