Supabase vs Firebase: which to choose in 2026

Both give you a database, sign-in, file storage and server functions without running servers. The database underneath is what separates them.

In short

Supabase wraps a standard Postgres database with auth, storage, realtime and functions, so relational data, SQL and portability come first. Firebase offers Google's document database Firestore plus mature mobile tooling such as push messaging and crash reports. Choose Supabase for relational web products and AI search, Firebase for mobile-first apps with simple, nested data.

What you get from each

Both are backend-as-a-service platforms. That means a team can build a working product without standing up its own servers first. Each bundles a database, user sign-in, file storage, serverless functions and live updates.

The data shape test

Before comparing features, sketch your data on paper. This one exercise decides more projects than any feature table.

Take an ordering product. A customer places orders. Each order has lines. Each line points to a product with a price, and finance wants a report of revenue by product category per month. That is relational data with joins and aggregates. Postgres handles it directly with SQL, and Supabase gives you that.

Now take a chat or social feed. Each user has a stream of small messages, read in order, mostly one conversation at a time, and shown live. That is a good match for documents and live listeners, which is where Firestore performs well and where Firebase's mobile SDKs make life easy.

Where it gets awkward is the mismatch. Reporting over document data usually means exporting it to another system. Live chat on Postgres works, but you will think harder about realtime channels and indexes.

Our published case studies do not feature a project on either platform. This table comes from how each system is designed and from the kinds of builds our web and AI teams plan. Confirm current limits and prices in each provider's documentation.

How the bills behave

Price is not a number to compare. It is a shape. Firebase's Firestore charges by operations: reads, writes and deletes, plus storage and network. A screen that loads a long list can cost many reads each time someone opens it. Supabase's plans are built around project size, compute and usage of storage, bandwidth and monthly active users, so a busy app with heavy queries pushes you to a larger compute tier instead of a per-read charge.

Neither shape is cheaper in general. An app with chatty lists and many small reads can surprise you on Firebase. An app with heavy analytical queries can need a bigger Postgres on Supabase. Before launch, estimate your busiest screen: how many documents or rows does one load touch, and how many loads per day? Put those numbers into each provider's current calculator.

  • Set budget alerts on day one.
  • Cache lists that rarely change.
  • Paginate everything.
  • Test with realistic data volumes, not ten rows.

Lock-in and exit

Supabase's core is Postgres, so your schema and data export cleanly to any other Postgres host, and some features can run on your own infrastructure. Leaving Firebase means translating document data into another model and replacing Firebase-specific services. It is doable, but it is a rewrite of the data layer. If a long product life or acquisition due diligence is likely, that difference matters.

Equally, do not over-weight it. A fast MVP that finds users is worth more than a portable one that never ships. For a first release, pick the stack your team can move quickly on.

Where we fit

We build web apps, SaaS products and MVPs, and choose the backend from the data shape and the team. Our Supabase development page covers how we set up row level security, migrations and environments, and our MVP development work starts with the data sketch described above.

Questions, answered

Is Supabase a Firebase alternative?
Yes, it covers the same ground with a different foundation. It uses Postgres where Firebase uses Firestore. If your data is relational, that often makes Supabase the simpler choice.
Which scales better?
Both scale far beyond most startups. Scaling problems usually come from query design, indexes and cost control rather than the platform. Plan for them early on either one.
Which is better for a mobile app?
Firebase has the deeper mobile toolkit, including push messaging and crash reporting. Supabase works well with mobile clients too, but you may add separate services for those extras.
Can I use either with Next.js?
Yes. Both have JavaScript SDKs and work with server and client rendering. Keep secret keys on the server and protect data with access rules.
How hard is it to migrate from Firebase to Supabase?
It means remodeling documents into tables, moving users, rewriting security rules as policies and changing client code. Small apps take days; large apps take planning and a parallel run.
