Backlink quality guide

How to build high quality backlinks for SEO

A good backlink is a link a real editor placed because your page helped their reader. Everything below is a way to get more of those and fewer of the other kind.

In short

Build high quality backlinks by publishing something other sites in your field want to cite, then asking the people who write about that topic. Judge each prospect on relevance, real traffic, editorial placement and whether the page is indexed. A few links from relevant sites that real readers visit beat hundreds from directories or link networks.

What makes a backlink high quality

Quality is not a score from a tool. Domain rating and similar numbers are estimates that help you sort a list, but Google does not use them. What matters is whether the link looks like a decision by a person who had a reason to make it.

Check five things before you spend time on any prospect:

SignalStrongWeak
RelevanceSite covers your topic or your customers' industryGeneral 'write for us' site on every subject
Real visitorsPages get search traffic and the site has an audienceNo organic traffic, empty blog archive
PlacementInside the body text, surrounded by relevant sentencesFooter, sidebar, author bio on a thin page
IndexedLinking page appears in Google when you search its titlePage is not indexed, so the link is invisible
Outbound patternA handful of sources per article, mixed anchorsDozens of commercial links per page

If you would be embarrassed to explain to a client why the link exists, it is not a high quality link.

Five ways to earn them

  1. Publish one citable assetA survey of your own customers, a calculator, a dataset you collected, or a clear explanation of a rule people keep getting wrong. It has to be something a journalist or blogger can point to instead of writing it themselves.
  2. Find unlinked mentionsSearch for your brand name and product names. When a site mentions you without linking, a short polite note asking for the link converts better than any cold pitch.
  3. Offer a real expert quoteJournalists and bloggers need named sources. Reply to their requests with a specific, short answer from the person who does the work, not a press release.
  4. Use your existing relationshipsSuppliers, partners, associations, event organizers and customers you have worked with often have a page where a link to you makes sense. These are usually the easiest high-relevance links.
  5. Reclaim broken linksFind pages that link to a dead URL of yours, or to a dead competitor page on your topic, and offer your live page as the replacement.

For outreach wording, the link building outreach template gives sample emails you can adapt. If you want a team to run this for you, see our link building service.

A worked scoring example

Say a small accounting software company has six prospects. Score each one from 0 to 2 on the five signals above. This is an invented example to show the method, not a client result.

Decide a cut-off before you start. Here, anything under 7 is skipped. The point of the sheet is to stop you from accepting a link just because it is available.

How to ask without sounding like everyone else

  • Name the exact page of theirs you read and what was missing or out of date.
  • Say in one sentence what your page adds, and link to it once.
  • Offer something they can use even if they say no, such as a corrected figure or a quote.
  • Follow up once after a week, then stop.
  • Never ask for a specific anchor text. Let the editor write it.

Expect most replies to be silence. A realistic outcome is that a small share of well-targeted emails produce a link, and the rate drops fast when the pitch is generic. Track sent, replied and linked in a sheet so you know what is working.

Pitfalls that make links worthless or risky

  • Buying links in bulk. Google's spam policies treat paid links that pass ranking signals as a violation. If you sponsor something, the link should be marked so it does not pass signals.
  • Exact-match anchors everywhere. A natural profile is mostly brand names, your URL and plain phrases.
  • Link swaps at scale. One partner link is fine. A network of reciprocal links is a pattern.
  • Chasing authority scores. A link from a small, relevant site with real readers can do more than a high-score site with no connection to your topic.
  • Ignoring the page being linked to. If the target page is thin or slow, the links have nothing to lift.

Fix the technical basics first. Links to a page that redirects through three hops, returns errors or is blocked from crawling lose value. A technical SEO check comes before outreach for that reason.

How to know it is working

In Google Search Console, open Links and watch top linking sites and top linked pages. Then compare impressions and average position for the linked pages over the next 8 to 12 weeks. Links take time to be found, processed and to affect rankings, and other changes on the site muddy the picture, so look for direction rather than a single week's number.

Questions, answered

How many backlinks do I need?
There is no fixed number. Look at the sites ranking for your target phrase and count the distinct sites linking to them. That gap is your starting target, and relevance matters more than the count.
Are nofollow links worth getting?
Yes, when they send real visitors or build recognition. Google treats nofollow as a hint, and a link on a respected page can bring referral traffic and later natural links even if it passes little ranking value.
Can I build high quality backlinks without writing content?
Partly. Partners, suppliers, associations and unlinked mentions need no new content. For links from strangers you usually need a page worth citing, since no editor links to a thin service page.
Is it safe to buy backlinks?
It is against Google's spam policies when the links are meant to pass ranking signals. Sponsorships and advertising are fine when the link is marked accordingly. We do not recommend buying links that look editorial.
How long until high quality backlinks help rankings?
Usually several weeks to a few months after the link goes live, depending on how quickly the linking page is crawled and how competitive the phrase is. Do not judge a campaign inside the first month.
