Content workflow
How to write SEO content
SEO content is writing built to answer one search well. Follow the same seven steps each time and quality stops depending on mood.
In short
To write SEO content, choose one search query, check what already ranks for it, outline the answer, write the direct answer first, add proof the reader can use, optimize the title and structure, then publish and measure in Search Console. Each page should serve one intent. Writing for several keywords at once weakens all of them.
The seven steps
- Pick one query and one readerWrite down the exact phrase and who types it. A person searching how to write SEO content wants a method. A person searching what is SEO content wants a definition. They need different pages.
- Read the current resultsOpen the first page of results in a private window. Note the page types, the headings they share and what each one leaves out. The gaps are your angle.
- Outline around questionsTurn the shared headings and the leftover questions into a list of H2s. Put the one that answers the query first.
- Write the answer firstOpen with two or three sentences that settle the question. Then explain, show an example and list the exceptions.
- Add something only you can addA worked example, your own numbers, a template, a photo of the real process. This is what separates a page from the ten similar ones above it.
- Optimize the detailsTitle, URL, meta description, headings, internal links, image alt text. Keep each short and plain.
- Publish, request indexing and measureSubmit the URL in Search Console, then check queries and positions after a few weeks. Revise based on what people actually searched.
Time budget for a 1,500 word article
Writers tend to underestimate research and overestimate drafting. This split is a reasonable starting point for a competent writer who knows the subject. Adjust it to your own pace.
| Stage | Share of time | Output |
|---|---|---|
| Query and results review | 15 percent | One page of notes, a chosen angle |
| Outline | 10 percent | H2 list with one line under each |
| Drafting | 30 percent | Full first draft |
| Adding proof and examples | 20 percent | Original example, table or screenshot |
| Editing for clarity | 15 percent | Shorter sentences, cut repetition |
| On-page details and publishing | 10 percent | Title, meta, links, indexing request |
If drafting takes the most time, you probably skipped the outline. If editing takes the most time, the draft started before the angle was clear.
What makes content count as SEO content
Search engines do not reward a keyword count. They reward a page that satisfies the reader who arrived. That is why the measurable parts of SEO writing look like ordinary good writing: a clear answer, a logical order, specific detail and a page that loads and reads well on a phone.
- One topic per page, matching one search intent.
- The main phrase appears naturally in the title, the H1 and the first paragraph, then wherever it fits.
- Related terms show up because the subject needs them, not because a tool listed them.
- Claims are specific and can be checked.
- Internal links point to the next logical page, with descriptive link text.
Keyword research supports all of this. If you have not chosen a phrase yet, start with keyword research for content writing.
Briefs save rewrites
If more than one person touches the content, write a brief before drafting. A good brief names the query, the reader, the angle, the headings, the sources, the internal links and the call to action. It takes twenty minutes and removes most of the back-and-forth. Our SEO content brief template lists the fields.
Pitfalls to avoid
- Writing for a keyword instead of a question. The result reads as filler.
- Burying the answer under a long introduction.
- Copying the structure of the top result. You end up as the eleventh version of the same page.
- Publishing and never looking again. Search Console shows which queries a page actually earns, and many of them are not the one you aimed at.
- Padding to hit a word count. A page that answers fully in 700 words should stay at 700.
Length follows the question. Check how long the closest matching results run, then be as long as the subject needs and no longer.
Doing it at volume
A single article follows this workflow. A content programme needs a topic map, a publishing calendar, editing standards and reporting. If you want that handled, see our SEO content writing service. You get a fixed quote after a short call through the contact page.
