Starter plan

SEO for beginners: a 30-day starter plan

Reading about SEO is easy to do forever. This plan turns it into four weeks of small jobs, about three hours each week, with a result you can check at the end.

In short

To start SEO as a beginner, spend week one setting up Search Console and a baseline, week two fixing basic technical problems, week three improving your five most important pages, and week four earning first links and reviewing results. Budget about three hours a week. Expect early signals in a month and clearer traffic gains over several months.

Before you start: three decisions

  • Pick the goal in business words: calls, quote requests, bookings or orders. Traffic alone is not a goal.
  • Pick five pages that matter most: usually the home page and four services or products.
  • Pick who owns the work. One person, with the access needed to edit the site.

You do not need a paid tool for this plan. Search Console and a spreadsheet are enough.

2Fix the base3 hoursNo pages blocked by mistake, site on HTTPS and fast enough on a phone
3Improve five pages4 hoursEach page has a clear title, heading, answer and next step
4Earn trust and review3 hoursListing complete, two local or industry links asked for, results noted

Week 1: measure

  1. Verify the site in Search ConsoleChoose the domain option if you can. It takes a few minutes, and data starts building straight away.
  2. Submit your sitemapMost website platforms create one at an address ending in sitemap.xml. If you cannot find it, an SEO plugin or the platform settings will show it.
  3. Set up analytics and goalsTrack form submissions, calls and orders so you can link visits to results.
  4. Save a baselineNote current clicks, impressions, indexed pages and enquiries in a spreadsheet. You will compare against it on day 30.

Week 2: fix the base

Open the Pages report in Search Console and read the reasons next to pages that are not indexed. A page you want found should not be there. Check these common problems.

ProblemHow to spot itFix
Page hidden by accidentNot indexed, reason says noindexUntick the hide-from-search option or remove the tag
Two versions of the siteBoth http and https, or www and non-www, loadRedirect all to one version
Broken pagesLinks lead to 404 errorsFix the link or redirect the old address
Slow phone experienceCore Web Vitals report shows poor pagesShrink images first
Missing titlesBrowser tab says 'Home' or the site name onlyWrite a unique title per page

If a fix needs a developer, write down the page, the problem and the expected outcome. Our technical SEO checklist has a longer version.

Week 3: improve five pages

For each of your five pages, do the same short routine.

  1. Choose one search to targetType it into Google and read the top three results. Write what they cover that you do not.
  2. Write the title and headingInclude the service and, for local work, the place. Keep the title under about 60 characters.
  3. Add a direct answer near the topTwo or three sentences stating what you offer, for whom and how to start.
  4. Fill the gapsAdd the sections the top results show and you lack, such as process, prices that you can state, FAQs and photos.
  5. Add one clear actionA button or form that fits the intent, not three competing ones.

Do not rewrite a page that already brings traffic without saving a copy of the old text. For help finding search terms, use our beginner keyword research guide.

Week 4: trust and review

  • Complete your Google Business Profile if customers visit or you serve an area. Add categories, hours, services and real photos.
  • Ask two relevant places for a link: a supplier, a local association, a partner or an event page that lists you.
  • Ask recent happy customers for reviews, without incentives.
  • Compare your baseline with now. Note impressions, indexed pages and enquiries.

A month is too short to judge rankings. Judge whether the work is done, the data is clean and early indicators such as impressions and indexed pages are moving. For the long view, our SEO ROI calculator helps estimate what extra visits would be worth.

Beginner mistakes to avoid

  • Starting with a blog before the service pages are right.
  • Buying links or bulk directory listings.
  • Changing the site design and the page addresses in the same month.
  • Copying text from competitors or from a generic AI draft without adding anything of your own.
  • Quitting after six weeks.

If the plan stalls because the site is hard to edit or the cause is technical, an SEO audit can list what to fix. You get a fixed quote after a short call on the contact page.

Questions, answered

How do I start SEO as a complete beginner?
Set up Search Console, record your starting numbers, fix anything that blocks pages from being indexed, then improve your five most important pages one at a time.
How many hours a week does SEO take?
A starter plan can run on about three hours a week. Larger sites and competitive markets need more.
Do I need paid SEO tools?
Not to begin. Search Console, analytics and a spreadsheet cover the first months. Paid tools help once you have a larger site or need competitor data.
What is the single most useful thing a beginner can do?
Make sure each important page clearly answers one search, loads well on a phone and can be indexed.
When should I hire an SEO agency?
When the site is large or being rebuilt, when you have done the basics with no growth, or when you do not have the time to keep it up.
