SEO for hotels
SEO for hotels: how to win more direct bookings
For a hotel, SEO has one job: make the guest who already knows your name, or your neighborhood, book with you instead of an online travel agency.
In short
SEO for hotels aims to turn search visibility into direct bookings. Build a complete Google Business Profile, connect your rates to Google's hotel listings, create detailed pages for each room type and nearby attraction, add Hotel schema, speed up the booking path, and answer guest questions in your own words before travel sites do.
The real problem: who gets the booking
A traveler searching for a hotel name or a destination sees three kinds of results: travel agency sites such as Booking.com and Expedia, Google's own hotel listings, and your site. Online travel agencies charge commission on each booking, so a guest who books direct is usually worth more to you for the same room.
You will not outrank a large travel site for a broad phrase such as hotels in a big city. You can win phrases that include your name, your neighborhood, your style of stay and your specific rooms. That is where hotel SEO effort pays.
Where to compete
| Search | Example | Realistic aim | Main lever |
|---|---|---|---|
| Brand | harbor view inn | Own the whole first page: site, profile, social and listing | Google Business Profile, consistent name, fast site |
| Brand plus intent | harbor view inn parking, pet friendly | Answer on your site so guests do not need a third party | FAQ and amenities pages |
| Neighborhood | boutique hotel near the old market | Show up in the map and hotel results | Profile, reviews, location page |
| Experience | family suite with kitchen near beach | Beat generic listings with detail | Room pages and photos |
| Events | hotel near the convention center march | Capture dated demand | Event pages made ahead of time |
Steps
- Complete your Google Business ProfileChoose the right category for your property type, list amenities accurately, upload fresh photos of rooms, lobby, breakfast and exteriors, and keep check-in times and contact details current.
- Connect your rates to GoogleGoogle's Hotel Center and its free booking links let a guest go from a hotel listing straight to your booking engine. Ask your booking engine provider whether it supports this feed.
- Give every room type its own pageShow real photos, size, bed types, what is included, and a rate calendar or a clear booking button. Describe the view and noise honestly. Guests remember surprises.
- Write about the area as a local wouldPages on walkable restaurants, transit, events and day trips attract planning searches. Keep them short, specific and updated.
- Add structured dataHotel or LodgingBusiness schema with address, amenities, check-in times and aggregate review information only where it complies with Google's rules for reviews.
- Shorten the booking pathDates, room, guests, pay. Each extra step loses guests. Test it on a phone first, since much travel research happens there.
- Track direct bookings by sourceConnect the booking engine to analytics so you can see which pages lead to reservations and which only get views.
Reviews: the quiet ranking factor
Guests read reviews before anything else, and Google shows them in the profile. Send a review request after checkout, not at arrival. Reply to each one, name the specific point raised, and keep the tone calm. A thoughtful answer to a poor review often does more for a reader than five new positive ones.
- Do not offer discounts or perks in exchange for positive reviews. Review platforms prohibit it.
- Do not copy reviews onto your site unless you have permission and mark them up correctly.
- Fix recurring complaints at the source. Slow check-in and weak wifi show up repeatedly in guest feedback and in search.
Seasonality and special cases
Plan content two to three months ahead of each peak. A wedding season page published in the same week as the first enquiries is too late. Independent properties and small groups usually do better with a single strong site than with a separate microsite for every room type.
For a hotel group, give each property its own page with a unique description, photos and map, and link them from a hub. Duplicate text across properties wastes crawl effort and blurs which page should rank.
Check local rules on displaying prices. Some markets require tax-inclusive prices or resort fees to be shown in the first price a guest sees.
Pitfalls
- A site that depends on a booking widget loaded from another domain, so the pages themselves hold almost no text.
- Photos that are huge and slow. Compress them and give each descriptive alt text.
- Different property names across Google, your site and listings.
- Ignoring accessibility information. Step-free access and accessible rooms are searched for by guests who need them.
