How to get your brand mentioned by ChatGPT
There is no form to submit and no way to pay for a mention. ChatGPT names brands that it keeps seeing described the same way in many independent places.
In short
You get mentioned by ChatGPT when independent sources describe your brand in the same words, next to the category you want to be known for. Fix the facts on your own site, earn mentions on third-party pages, make sure its crawlers can read you, then test a fixed set of prompts monthly and track your mention rate.
Why ChatGPT names some brands and not others
ChatGPT answers from two places. The first is what the model absorbed during training. The second is a live web search it runs when a question needs fresh or specific facts. A brand gets named when the same short description of it shows up repeatedly in both places: what it is, who it serves, where it operates.
That is why a mention is a reputation signal, not a ranking position. A company with a thin website and one press release will rarely be named. A company that appears in a trade article, two comparison pages, a podcast transcript and a well-kept profile page, all saying roughly the same thing, will be named more often.
Nobody can promise a mention. Answers change between runs and between users. What you can do is raise the odds and measure them.
Six steps to earn mentions
- Write one sentence that defines youName, category, audience, location. For example: 'Northfield Dental is a family dental clinic in Leeds for children and anxious adults.' This sentence is the unit that gets repeated, so settle it before anything else.
- Put that sentence on your own siteUse it on the home page, the About page and in Organization schema. Add facts a model can lift cleanly: year of launch, locations, services, team roles. Our schema markup generator outputs the JSON-LD.
- Match it on every profile you controlLinkedIn, Google Business Profile, Crunchbase, app stores, industry directories. Same name spelling, same category wording, same description. Mismatches such as 'Ltd' on one and 'Inc' on another weaken the pattern.
- Earn mentions on pages you do not controlComparison articles, trade press, associations, podcasts, expert quotes, conference pages, forum answers that are useful on their own. Pitch these as help for the writer's readers, not as a request for a link.
- Let the right crawlers inCheck robots.txt and any firewall rules. OAI-SearchBot is the crawler behind ChatGPT search results. Blocking it keeps you out of live answers.
- Keep facts current and datedShow 'last updated' dates on pricing, service and about pages. Stale facts get replaced by fresher sources.
Which sources move the needle
Not every mention counts equally. Use this table to decide where the next hour goes.
| Source type | Why it helps | Effort | First action |
|---|---|---|---|
| Your own site | Defines the facts others repeat | Low | Rewrite the About page around the one-sentence definition |
| Trade or industry press | Independent and category specific | High | Offer a data point or a how-to to one editor |
| Comparison and 'alternatives' pages | Shows you next to named competitors | Medium | List which pages already compare your category and ask for corrections or inclusion |
| Directories and profiles | Confirms basic facts | Low | Audit five profiles for name and category drift |
| Community answers | Real phrasing from real buyers | Medium | Answer questions where your category is discussed, with disclosure |
| Reviews on third-party sites | Describes what you actually do | Ongoing | Ask real customers; never write or buy reviews |
Measure it with a prompt test
Pick 20 prompts a buyer might type. Split them into four groups of five: branded ('what is Northfield Dental'), category ('family dentists in Leeds'), comparison ('Northfield vs another clinic') and problem ('who treats dental anxiety in children'). Run each three times, logging the date and whether web search was on.
That gives 60 answers. If your brand appears in 9 of them, your mention rate is 9 divided by 60, or 15 percent. Track the four groups separately. Branded prompts usually rise first. Category prompts are the real goal and move slowest.
| Prompt group | Answers | Mentions (example) | Rate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Branded | 15 | 13 | 87% |
| Category | 15 | 1 | 7% |
| Comparison | 15 | 3 | 20% |
| Problem | 15 | 2 | 13% |
| Total | 60 | 19 | 32% |
These figures are an illustration of the method, not a client result. Add a second check in analytics: ChatGPT links normally carry a utm_source of chatgpt.com, so sessions from it can be filtered in GA4. Our AI visibility checker describes a fuller version of this test.
Pitfalls that waste months
- Chasing a mention before the basics exist. If Google cannot find or understand your site, ChatGPT search will not either.
- Testing once. One run tells you almost nothing because answers vary. Use at least three runs per prompt.
- Spamming forums or buying reviews. Platforms remove them, and a pattern of fake mentions can damage trust with real readers.
- Mixing up crawlers. GPTBot relates to model training, OAI-SearchBot to search results. Many sites block one and accidentally block both.
- Describing yourself five different ways. Models average what they see. Pick one definition.
