Squarespace vs WordPress: which to choose in 2026
One is a closed, managed package. The other is open software with a huge ecosystem. Your answer depends on how much you want to change later.
In short
Squarespace is the simpler choice for a small site that one person will edit: design, hosting and security come in one subscription. WordPress is the better choice when you expect to grow into custom features, many pages, memberships, complex SEO or a shop. Pick Squarespace for speed, WordPress for room to change.
The trade in one sentence
Squarespace trades flexibility for ease. Everything is inside one product, so there is little to break and little to extend. WordPress trades ease for flexibility. You can build almost anything, and you also inherit decisions about hosting, themes, plugins and updates.
Most failed website projects we see come from choosing on launch speed and ignoring year two. The question to ask is not which is faster to start. It is which one still fits when the business needs a booking system, a second language, a members area or a serious blog.
A six-question test
Answer these honestly. Score one point for each answer that matches the second column.
| Question | Squarespace fits if | WordPress fits if |
|---|---|---|
| How many pages will you have in two years? | Under about 30 | Hundreds, or growing steadily |
| Who edits the site? | One or two people, comfortable in a visual editor | Several people with different roles |
| Will you need features beyond a brochure? | Maybe a simple contact form or booking widget | Memberships, directories, multi-language, custom forms, integrations |
| How much does search traffic matter? | Nice to have | A main source of leads |
| Do you want to host and back up yourself? | No, include everything | Yes, or you will pay a team to |
| How important is owning the code and data? | Not very | Very, you may switch providers |
Mostly first column: Squarespace is a reasonable, low-stress choice. Mostly second: WordPress. Split evenly: start with the thing you will need in the next twelve months.
Where WordPress pulls ahead
- Extensions. Plugins and custom code cover bookings, learning platforms, directories, multilingual sites and connections to your CRM. Squarespace has extensions, but the range is narrower.
- Control over SEO. You can shape URL structure, schema markup, redirects, canonical tags and sitemaps at a fine level, or hand that to an SEO specialist who works inside the same system.
- Ownership. You can move hosts, keep the database and export everything. That matters when a provider changes pricing.
- Scale. Hundreds of pages, complex taxonomies and custom post types are normal in WordPress.
Our own WordPress work includes the landing pages we built for Interakt in a two-week window, and the online store for A'YUCO, where education content, workshops and shop needed to live side by side. Both are examples of sites that grew past a brochure, which is the point where WordPress usually starts to pay off.
Where Squarespace pulls ahead
- Speed to launch. Choose a template, add content, publish. For a portfolio, a consultant or a local venue, it can be live in days.
- Fewer moving parts. No plugin conflicts, no server updates and no security patching schedule to keep.
- Design consistency. Templates are polished and hard to break, which suits owners who do not want to make design decisions.
- One bill, one support route.
We say this plainly because it is true: many small businesses do not need us to build them a WordPress site. A well-set-up Squarespace site, with proper page titles, descriptions and a clear structure, can serve a small local business for years.
Decision table by business type
| Business | Recommendation | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Photographer or artist portfolio | Squarespace | Visual templates and low upkeep. |
| Solo consultant with five pages | Squarespace | Nothing to maintain. |
| Professional firm with 40 service and location pages | WordPress | Page volume, structure and SEO control. |
| Online course or membership | WordPress | Learning and membership plugins, or a custom build. |
| Shop with a large catalog and special rules | Neither, look at Shopify | See Shopify vs WooCommerce. |
| Marketing site with a content team | WordPress | Roles, workflows and a flexible editor. |
| Short-term campaign page | Squarespace or a landing-page tool | Speed matters more than depth. |
Moving from Squarespace to WordPress
A move is mostly rebuild work plus careful redirects. Text and images come across, but layouts do not, because templates differ. Squarespace exports some content, such as blog posts, in a format WordPress can import; pages usually need to be recreated. Then each old URL must be redirected to its new equivalent so you keep the rankings you earned.
- Crawl the old siteRecord every URL, title, description and the pages that get search traffic.
- Plan the new structureKeep URLs the same where possible; list the ones that change.
- Rebuild and importMove posts with the importer, build pages in the new theme, check images and forms.
- Redirect and launchAdd 301 redirects, submit the sitemap and watch Search Console for errors.
Our Wix to WordPress migration page follows very similar steps, and our website migration checklist lists what to verify before and after launch.
