In short

Liftup Technologies builds AI chatbots for New Zealand businesses, working remotely from India. The bot answers from documents you approve, using the OpenAI or Anthropic (Claude) APIs, and passes sensitive or unclear questions to your staff. We design around the Privacy Act 2020 and the Fair Trading Act. You get a fixed quote after a short call.

Where a chatbot pays off for a Kiwi business

Small teams answer the same questions many times a week: opening hours, delivery areas, quote requests, booking changes. A well-scoped chatbot takes the repetitive ones and leaves staff the cases that need judgement. It works best when your source information is already clear and written down.

Business typeTypical bot jobHandoff trigger
Online storeOrder status, delivery times to NZ regions, returns stepsDamaged goods, refund disputes
Tradie or service firmCollect job details and photos, offer booking slotsUrgent faults, safety issues
Clinic or professional practiceOpening hours, fees, what to bringAny health or legal advice request
Tourism operatorItinerary questions, seasonal hours, booking helpGroup or custom requests

A bot is not the right answer for every enquiry. Complex quotes, complaints and anything involving health, money or legal advice are better handled by a person. We make that line explicit in the first call, so the bot is built to stop at the right moment.

Privacy Act 2020 design points

A chatbot collects whatever people type, including names, phone numbers and sometimes sensitive details. The Privacy Act 2020 expects you to collect only what you need, tell people why, store it safely and not keep it longer than necessary. The Office of the Privacy Commissioner has published guidance on applying the privacy principles to AI tools.

  • A short notice in the chat window says it is an AI assistant and links to your privacy statement.
  • The bot asks for personal details only when the task needs them, and never for passwords or card numbers.
  • Transcripts are kept for a set period and then deleted.
  • Hosted model APIs process data outside New Zealand. Information privacy principle 12 governs disclosure abroad, so we document the flow and the provider terms. Your lawyer should confirm what applies.
  • If personal information is exposed, the Act has a breach notification duty. We agree who acts and how fast before launch.

Keeping answers accurate

What a bot says about price, stock, warranty or service can be treated as a statement from your business. The Fair Trading Act 1986 prohibits misleading conduct, and the CGA, a 1993 consumer-rights statute, gives consumers automatic rights that a bot must not contradict. So we use retrieval from approved pages instead of free guessing. The bot cites the source page, says when it cannot find an answer and offers a person instead.

We test with real questions from your inbox and phone log, including awkward ones. Mistakes are logged and traced to a gap in your content or an instruction, then fixed. Our AI chatbot script template helps you prepare the opening lines and handoff rules.

Language is another test. Kiwi customers write casually, use local place names, abbreviations and sometimes te reo words. We include these in test sets, so the bot understands a question about Ōtautahi or Tāmaki Makaurau as well as about Christchurch or Auckland, and answers in the same plain style your brand uses.

How the build runs

  1. ScopePick the top ten questions, the channels (website, WhatsApp or others) and the handoff rules.
  2. ContentGather the pages, price lists and policies the bot may use, and mark what it must never say.
  3. Build and testA working version on sample data, reviewed in a weekly demo with your staff.
  4. Launch and watchGo live with logging, then review the first weeks of conversations together.

We work remotely, with no New Zealand office. New Zealand is 6.5 or 7.5 hours ahead of India, so a 3 pm Tauranga call lands at about 7:30 or 8:30 am for us. See the AI chatbot service page for more on how we build.

After launch we review conversations weekly for the first month. Common failed questions become new content, and wrong answers become new rules. You get a short written note each week, and you can pause the bot at any time from an admin page.

Cost and what to expect

Projects start at $1,500 and our rate is $30 an hour, in US dollars. Price depends on how much content the bot learns, the channels, integrations with booking or order systems and the testing you want. Model usage is billed by the provider and grows with traffic. Read the AI chatbot cost guide or try the chatbot cost calculator. GST may apply to services supplied in New Zealand, so check with your accountant.

Questions, answered

Can the chatbot reply in te reo Māori?
It can handle simple te reo, but quality varies and mistakes in a language with cultural weight can offend. We suggest English first, and te reo only with review by a fluent speaker.
Will it replace my staff?
No. It handles repetitive questions and passes the rest to people with the chat history attached, so staff start informed.
Where is chat data stored?
Usually with the platform and model provider we configure, which may be outside New Zealand. We document it and you can ask us to limit retention.
How long does it take?
A focused bot on existing content often takes a few weeks. Integrations with orders or bookings add time. The quote states the timeline.
Can it work on WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger?
Often yes, subject to each platform's rules and approval steps. We confirm the channel on the first call.
