Mobile app development in Canada

Mobile app development for Canadian businesses

Canadian apps have to work for a country with long distances, patchy rural coverage and two official languages. We build iOS and Android apps for Canadian businesses remotely and keep the scope tight.

In short

Liftup Technologies builds iOS and Android apps for Canadian businesses using React Native or Flutter, working remotely from India with calls in Canadian mornings. We plan for English and French, offline use, privacy under PIPEDA and Quebec Law 25, and App Store and Google Play review. You get a fixed quote within one working day of a short call, and the app accounts stay in your name.

Who builds an app in Canada, and why

The requests we hear most often are field service tools for trades and utilities, booking and loyalty apps for clinics and retailers, and companion apps for existing software products. Some are first versions to test an idea. Others replace a spreadsheet and a group chat.

Before building, we ask whether an app is needed. A fast mobile website or a progressive web app can do the job for some businesses, and costs less. Our PWA vs native app comparison explains the trade. If the answer is a store app, we move to scope.

Canadian conditions that shape the design

ConditionWhy it mattersWhat we do
Rural and remote coverageWork crews and travelers lose signal outside citiesOffline storage and a sync queue that retries safely
Two official languagesQuebec users expect French in the whole appStrings stored in language files, French reviewed by a speaker
Winter useGloves, glare and cold-weather phonesLarge tap targets and high-contrast screens
Privacy lawPIPEDA applies, and Law 25 for Quebec usersMinimal data, clear consent screens, deletion route
PaymentsCards, wallets and Interac are all familiarProvider chosen with you; Interac options checked

Accessibility belongs in this list too. Screen reader labels, dynamic text size and sufficient contrast follow Apple and Google guidance, and the same WCAG principles used on the web.

Technology choices

For most Canadian business apps we recommend React Native or Flutter: one codebase for iOS and Android, native feel, and lower cost than building twice. Fully native Swift or Kotlin is worth it only where you need heavy device features, such as advanced camera or Bluetooth work. The backend is usually Node, a managed database and a clear API, hosted in a region you choose. Canadian cloud regions exist in Montreal and Toronto, which some customers prefer for data location.

If the app has to connect to an existing system, such as a CRM, accounting tool or inventory database, we start with that integration, because it is the part that most often changes the schedule.

Store review, privacy labels and permissions

  • Apple requires a privacy policy and privacy details for each app, and Google Play asks for a data safety form. We fill both from the actual data flows, not from guesses.
  • We request device permissions only at the moment of use and explain why, which also helps review.
  • Account deletion from inside the app is required by both stores for apps that create accounts. It also fits Canadian privacy expectations.
  • Push notifications and marketing messages follow CASL when they are commercial, so we build opt-in and opt-out into settings.

Review times vary, so we plan a buffer before any launch date, and avoid release weeks that collide with Black Friday and Boxing Day for retail apps.

Testing on real devices and real networks

An app that works on a developer's laptop on office Wi-Fi can fail on a three-year-old Android phone in a basement. We test on a spread of real devices, including older, cheaper models, and on throttled networks that mimic weak LTE. We also check airplane-mode behavior, interrupted uploads and what happens when the phone switches from Wi-Fi to cellular halfway through a form.

Beta testing runs through TestFlight for iOS and internal or closed testing tracks on Google Play. We ask a handful of real users from your team or customer base to try the weekly builds, and we collect their screen recordings. Crash reports and analytics are set up before launch, so the first week of real use tells us what to fix.

Accessibility gets its own test pass: VoiceOver on iOS, TalkBack on Android, larger text sizes, and color contrast in bright sunlight. For apps used by public-facing organizations in Ontario, these checks line up with the thinking behind AODA, even though the regulation's website rules do not apply to apps in a direct way.

How the project runs from India

  1. ScopeA short call, a feature list and a fixed quote within one working day.
  2. DesignClickable screens in Figma, reviewed before any code is written.
  3. Build in sprintsA test build on your phone every week through TestFlight and Google Play internal testing.
  4. Release and supportWe submit to both stores from your developer accounts, then fix issues found in the first weeks.

Review calls fit Canadian mornings: 10:30 in Toronto is 21:00 in India in winter. Vancouver is the hardest slot, so those teams get a recorded walkthrough with each weekly build.

Pricing

Projects start at $1,500 and our rate is $30 an hour, in US dollars. A simple app with a handful of screens sits near the lower end, while apps with payments, maps, chat or many integrations take more hours. Store fees are separate: Apple and Google charge developer account fees that you pay directly. Read the mobile app service page for scope, and the Canada web development overview for related work.

Questions, answered

Should my Canadian app support French?
If you serve Quebec, yes. Building the app with language files from the start makes French a translation task rather than a rebuild.
React Native or Flutter?
Both work well. We choose by your team's skills, the features needed and long-term maintenance, and explain the reason in the quote.
Who publishes the app?
You do, from developer accounts in your business name. We prepare and submit the builds.
Can the app work offline?
Yes. We store data on the device and sync it when the connection returns, with rules for conflicts.
Do you provide support after launch?
Yes. Fixes in the first weeks are part of the plan, and ongoing support is quoted separately by the hour.
Which phones do you test on?
A range of recent and older iPhones and Android devices, chosen from the models your users actually carry. Your analytics or a short survey helps us pick.
