In short

Liftup Technologies builds online stores for businesses selling in Japan, working remotely from India with calls booked in Japanese working hours. We choose the platform, set up card, konbini and PayPay payments through a provider that supports Japan, add the legal disclosure page, tax-inclusive pricing and delivery options, and test checkout in Japanese. Projects start at $1,500, with a fixed quote after a short call.

What Japanese shoppers expect at checkout

Japanese buyers compare stores on trust and detail. They look for a seller identity page, a clear delivery date, a plain return policy and a payment method they already use. A store that feels thin on these points loses sales even when the product and price are right. Large marketplaces set the standard, so a standalone store has to match their clarity.

We design checkout for that audience: short forms with postal code lookup, furigana fields where the courier needs them, and a visible total with tax included before the final click.

Payment methods to plan for

MethodWhy it mattersBuild note
Credit and debit cardsThe default for most online purchasesUse a provider with Japan acquiring and 3-D Secure support
Konbini paymentCustomers pay in cash at a convenience store after orderingOrder stays pending until payment arrives, so stock and email flows must handle expiry
PayPay and other walletsPopular app-based paymentAvailability and fees depend on your provider and contract
Carrier billingCharges appear on the phone billOffered by some providers, mainly for digital goods
Bank transferUsed for larger or business ordersMatch payments to orders by a reference code

Providers differ on which methods they support and what they charge, and terms change. We confirm current options with the provider you choose before checkout design is fixed. Stripe, for example, documents its konbini support in its docs.

Legal pages and tax display

Online sellers in Japan must publish a disclosure under the Act on Specified Commercial Transactions: seller name, address, contact details, prices, extra fees, payment and delivery timing, and return terms. The Consumer Affairs Agency explains the duty. We build the page into the footer and checkout, and you or your lawyer supply the wording.

Prices shown to consumers are normally tax included. Consumption tax is 10% for most goods and 8% for food and drink under the reduced rate, with some exceptions, so a mixed basket needs both rates calculated correctly. If you issue invoices to business buyers, the qualified invoice system started in October 2023 adds a registration number and tax-by-rate lines. Your accountant confirms the setup.

Delivery, returns and customer service

  • Delivery date and time slot choices, since many customers expect to pick them.
  • Carrier integrations for tracking numbers and notifications through email or LINE.
  • Clear shipping fees by region, including remote islands where fees are higher.
  • A returns page and a simple form, with replies in Japanese.
  • Gift options such as wrapping and message cards, important in July and December.

Selling from India or abroad

Foreign brands entering Japan face practical questions: where goods ship from, who handles customs and consumption tax on imports, and who answers customers. Ship from inside Japan if you can, because long delivery times and surprise import charges hurt conversion. Your tax adviser should confirm registration and filing duties for sales to Japanese consumers.

Search traffic matters too. Product pages written in Japanese and set up for search are covered in ecommerce SEO for Japan.

Timeline from India

  1. Scope callCatalog size, payment mix and shipping rules. Japan is 3.5 hours ahead of India, so 11:00 in Pune is 14:30 in Tokyo.
  2. Design and buildTemplates in Japanese, checkout set up on a private staging link.
  3. Test ordersCard, konbini and wallet test payments, failed payments and refunds.
  4. LaunchOutside Golden Week and the year-end peak when possible, with a monitored first week.

Checkout is where sales are lost, so we test it harder than anything else. Test orders cover every payment method, a failed card, a konbini order that expires, a partial refund and a cancelled order. We check that emails arrive in Japanese with correct totals and tax lines, that stock levels move as expected and that the admin team can find and handle each case.

We also try the store on common phones and on slow connections, since many orders start on mobile. After launch, the first week is watched closely: abandoned checkouts, payment errors and support questions point to problems that testing missed.

Price

Projects start at $1,500, with a rate of $30 an hour, and a fixed quote follows a short call on the contact page. Catalog size, custom features, migration and integrations move the price. See the ecommerce website cost guide and our ecommerce solutions page.

Questions, answered

Do we need a Japanese company to sell online in Japan?
Not always, but payment providers, tax registration and some marketplaces have their own requirements. Check with your accountant and the provider early.
Can we offer konbini payment?
Yes, through providers that support it. Orders wait for payment, so stock holds and expiry emails need planning.
Should prices include tax?
For consumer sales in Japan, tax-included display is the normal practice. Confirm with your adviser.
Can the store be in both Japanese and English?
Yes. We set up a Japanese default and an English version with correct hreflang.
Who owns the store?
You do. Platform, payment and hosting accounts are in your name.
How do you handle returns and refunds in the store?
Returns are set up to follow the policy on your disclosure page. Refunds go back through the payment provider, and konbini or bank-paid orders need a manual refund route that we plan with you.
