Austria has roughly nine million people, and almost all of them search in German on Google. The catch is that Germany and Switzerland search in German too. A page written for Berlin buyers often sits above an Austrian page for the same query, simply because German sites have more links and more content. Winning here means signalling clearly that your page is for Austria.

That signal comes from several places at once: a .at domain or a clear /at/ section, hreflang de-AT, prices in euros with Austrian tax handling, an Austrian Impressum, local phone numbers and wording that Austrians actually use. No single item decides the result. Together they tell Google, and AI tools, who the page is for.

Austrian German is not German German

Searchers in Vienna, Graz or Innsbruck use their own vocabulary. Using the German form can look foreign, and it can miss queries entirely. The examples below are a starting prompt. We confirm each term in Search Console data before it goes into a title.

Many commercial terms are the same in both countries. The risk is highest on food, retail, regional tourism and local services, where everyday words differ most.

Privacy, consent and measurement

GDPR applies, and the national supervisory authority is the Datenschutzbehörde (DSB), alongside the Austrian Data Protection Act. Cookie and tracking consent also falls under Austrian telecommunications law. In practice, an SEO programme needs a consent banner that works, an up-to-date privacy policy, and an analytics set-up that your lawyer has approved.
