Website design for nonprofits

Website design for nonprofits and charities

A nonprofit website asks visitors to believe in something and then act: give, volunteer, attend or share. Everything on the site should make that step shorter.

In short

Liftup Technologies designs websites for nonprofits and charities in the USA, UK, Australia and Ireland. The site is built around giving: a fast donation flow with one-time and monthly options, clear impact stories, volunteer and event sign-up, and the registration details donors and funders look for. Projects start at $1,500 with a fixed quote within one working day of a short call.

Donors, volunteers and funders

Three groups use a nonprofit site, and each looks for something different. Donors want to know where the money goes and how to give. Volunteers want to know what they would do and when. Funders and grant officers check that you are a real, well-run organization with clear aims and a track record.

A clear home page states what you do, for whom and where, in two sentences, with a Donate button always visible. Below it, give each group a route: Give, Volunteer, Partner with us. Keep the story human. One concrete example of a person or place you serve says more than a paragraph of mission language, and consent for any story or photo must be recorded.

Smaller charities often have one person running the website part-time, so we focus on simple editing. Updating an event or news item should take minutes, not an agency call.

The donation flow

Most donors decide in a moment and abandon at the first friction. The flow should work on a phone, ask for as little as possible and offer the options donors expect.

Giving optionWhat the donor wantsDesign and setup note
One-time giftA fast, safe paymentPreset amounts with a custom field and clear meaning, such as what each amount funds
Monthly giftA small regular amountShown as the default or an equal choice, with easy cancellation information
Tribute or in-memory giftA way to mark an occasionOptional card message and notification to the recipient
Workplace or corporate givingMatching or sponsorshipA page with a contact form and the match information donors need
Tax reliefGift Aid in the UK, tax-deductible receipts in the USCheckbox and fields that the tax authority requires, with an automatic receipt
Legacy giftsInformation on leaving a gift in a willA page with guidance and a contact route, reviewed by your lawyer

We integrate with a payment platform such as Stripe or a nonprofit donation tool like Donorbox or Givebutter, depending on fees and the CRM you use. Recurring payment and receipt rules vary, so we confirm them with your finance lead.

Registration, trust and transparency

Donors check that a charity is real. In the US, a 501(c)(3) can be confirmed through the IRS Tax Exempt Organization Search. In the UK, charity registration numbers and the Gift Aid scheme are handled through gov.uk. Australia has charity registration through the ACNC and tax status through the ATO, and Ireland uses the Charities Regulator. Put your registration number in the footer and on the donation page, and publish annual reports or financial summaries where you can.

Fundraising rules vary by location, and some states and countries require registration to solicit. Ask your lawyer or regulator what applies to you. Our team builds the pages; the legal text comes from you.

Accessibility matters for this audience, and some funders ask about it. We build to WCAG 2.2 AA. See our accessibility checklist for what we test.

Events, volunteers and updates

Fundraising events and volunteer shifts need a calendar, sign-up forms and reminders. We can add an events page with registration, a volunteer interest form that goes to your coordinator and an email signup connected to your mailing tool. A news section with short updates keeps the site alive between campaigns and gives search engines fresh pages.

Giving peaks in the weeks before year end in many countries and around specific campaign dates, so we plan launches and test the donation flow before those windows. Our nonprofit SEO page explains how story and event pages are planned for search.

Process and pricing

We work remotely from Pune and schedule calls in your working hours, including evenings for volunteer-run boards. The steps are a discovery call, structure and wireframes, design, build on WordPress or Webflow, donation flow testing, and training for the person who will manage the site.

Projects start at $1,500, and our rate is $30 an hour. A small charity with six to eight pages and one donation form sits near the floor. Price rises with the number of programs, event registration, a members area or a custom donor database link. See nonprofit website cost for the main drivers, and website design for our approach.

Questions, answered

Which donation platform should we use?
It depends on fees, receipts, recurring options and your CRM. We compare two or three options with you before building.
Can we collect Gift Aid declarations?
Yes, for UK charities. The donation form includes the required declaration text and fields, which you should confirm with your finance lead.
Can volunteers sign up for shifts online?
Yes. A simple form works for small groups, and a scheduling tool can be added for larger ones.
Do you offer special pricing for nonprofits?
Our public pricing is the same for everyone: projects start at $1,500 at $30 an hour. We can reduce cost by keeping the scope focused.
Can we use our own photos of beneficiaries?
Only with consent, especially for children or vulnerable people. We recommend a written consent process and a fallback of non-identifying images.
