Shopify's built-in SEO traps

Shopify is a good base for search, but a few defaults need care. The same product can be reached through a collection path and a direct path, which creates duplicate URLs unless canonical tags point to one. Filter and sort parameters, tag pages and pagination can multiply thin pages. Themes and apps may add heavy scripts that slow mobile pages. And URL structure is partly fixed, so choices on handles and collections carry more weight.

The Shopify SEO checklist is the document we work from, and the Shopify SEO service page describes the engagement.

Danish language and markets

If your store sells to Danish customers, the storefront language, URLs and metadata should be Danish. For shops that also sell in other countries, Shopify Markets can serve language and currency versions. Done properly, it outputs hreflang tags for each version, and we check that a Danish page and its English twin point at each other. Prices show in DKK, include moms for consumers, and match what the checkout charges. A domain choice also arises: a .dk domain signals a local shop, while a .com with a /da folder works if you sell across borders.

Our hreflang generator helps verify tag pairs, and the international SEO service covers multi-country plans.

Collections, products and Danish search terms

Collections usually carry the most search demand, because people search for a category before a product. We research the Danish words buyers use for each category, which often differ from supplier text. Danish compounds are written as one word, so cykelhjelm and cykel hjelm are not the same query. Each important collection gets a unique heading, a short intro above the products and a longer buying guide below, with links to related collections.

  • Product titles that include the type, brand and a key attribute in Danish.
  • Unique descriptions instead of supplier text copied across shops.
  • Size, material, delivery and return facts in plain language.
  • Image file names and alt text that describe the product.

Our ecommerce SEO page for Denmark covers wider shop topics such as sale pages and Omnibus price rules.

Speed, mobile and consent

Most Danish shoppers use phones, so speed on mobile is a ranking and a sales issue. We test with real field data where available, remove apps that no longer earn their cost, and set image sizes and loading order. Tracking and marketing apps need prior consent under GDPR and the Danish cookie order, enforced by Datatilsynet. Consent means analytics undercounts, so we also report from Search Console clicks and Shopify's own order data. Our Core Web Vitals checker is used for before and after tests.

We work on a duplicate theme or with your approval in the live one, and never change checkout. Calls are held in the Danish morning and early afternoon.

Reviews, trust and sale pages

Danish shoppers look for signs that a shop is real: a CVR number, clear delivery and return terms, a visible contact route and independent reviews. We make sure these are present and crawlable, and that review markup only reflects genuine reviews shown on the page. For sales, we keep one stable URL for each campaign, remove it from navigation afterwards without breaking the link, and show price reductions against the lowest price of the previous 30 days, as the EU Omnibus rules require. Out-of-stock products keep their page, with alternatives, rather than disappearing.

Pricing

Work starts at $1,500, with extra hours at $30. Small stores with a few collections are near the start. Large catalogs, several languages and heavy content needs add scope. The ecommerce SEO cost guide gives ranges. If the store itself needs building, see Shopify development for Denmark.

Questions, answered

Is Shopify good for SEO?
Yes, with attention to duplicate URLs, collections, speed and language settings. We fix the weak spots.
Do we need a .dk domain?
Not necessarily. A .dk signals a local shop, but a well set up .com can rank too.
Can you edit our theme?
Yes, on a copy first. Changes go live after your review.
Will apps hurt our SEO?
Some do, mainly by slowing pages. We review each app and keep those that earn their cost.
How do you measure results?
Clicks and impressions from Search Console, organic orders from Shopify, and the pages that bring them.
