AI chatbots for insurance

AI chatbots for insurance agencies

Agencies spend hours on certificates of insurance, renewal questions and the first message of a claim. A chatbot takes the intake and routing so licensed staff handle the advice and the binding.

In short

An AI chatbot for an insurance agency collects quote details, answers general questions about coverage types, handles certificate and ID card requests, and gathers the first facts of a claim for the right person. It does not recommend coverage, bind policies or decide claims. Liftup Technologies builds it with your agency management system in mind. Projects start at $1,500.

Service work that buries producers

A small agency has a few licensed producers who also answer routine requests. A contractor needs a certificate of insurance for a job starting at 8 am. A customer wants a copy of an ID card. A policyholder has hit a deer on the road and wants to know what to do. Each of these is repeatable, and each pulls a producer away from sales.

Prospects add another stream. They ask what business owner's cover includes, whether you write for their trade and how fast you can quote. The first reply decides whether they stay.

What the chatbot takes on

  • Quote intake: business type, location, employees, revenue band, prior claims and renewal date, written into your CRM for the producer.
  • Certificate requests: collects holder name, address, job description and wording needed, then creates a task or sends it to your certificate tool.
  • Policy document requests: ID cards, declarations pages and endorsement copies by routing to the service team or a customer portal.
  • Claim first notice: collects date, place, description and photos, shows the carrier's claim number and phone, and alerts the claims contact. It does not judge cover.
  • Coverage explainers: plain-language definitions such as what a deductible is, with a clear note that policy wording governs.
  • Renewal reminders: answers to what happens at renewal and when to expect documents.

We connect to what agencies use, for example Applied Epic, Vertafore AMS360, HawkSoft, EZLynx, Salesforce or HubSpot, via the safest available route. Many agency systems have limited interfaces, so the first version often creates tasks by email or a form.

Giving advice or binding cover generally requires a license, and those rules differ by state and country. The chatbot should not stray into either.

Regulation and records

Insurance is regulated at state level in the US, and by bodies such as the FCA in the UK, ASIC in Australia and the Central Bank in Ireland. Rules cover who may sell, what must be disclosed and how complaints are handled. We keep disclosures visible, add a statement that the assistant is automated and cannot provide advice, and keep a record of each conversation for your compliance needs. Check specific wording with your compliance contact or state department.

Personal data in insurance can be very sensitive, from health to driving records. Our default is not to collect more than needed for the next step, and not to ask for government ID numbers in chat. The FTC Safeguards Rule and UK GDPR both expect sensible protection, and our AI agent security checklist sets out how we handle it.

How the project runs

  1. Inbox sampleWe review a few weeks of service emails to sort them into types and volumes.
  2. Compliance sign-offYour principal approves the disclaimers and the refusal text.
  3. Build the first three flowsUsually certificates, quote intake and claim first notice.
  4. Test with the teamAccount managers play policyholders, including upset ones.
  5. Launch and tuneWeekly review in the first month.

Cost

A website chatbot covering quote intake, certificate requests and claim routing can sit near our $1,500 minimum. A connection to an agency management system, multiple offices or WhatsApp add hours at $30 an hour. The fixed quote arrives within one working day of a short call. The biggest driver is how your agency system exposes data. See AI chatbot cost for the general breakdown, and try the chatbot cost calculator.

Questions, answered

Can the chatbot give a quote?
It can collect details and, if you have a rating tool with an interface, return an indication. A binding quote still comes from a licensed person.
How does it handle a claim at night?
It gives the carrier's 24-hour number, collects the basics and creates a task for your claims contact the next morning.
Will it work for both personal and commercial lines?
Yes, with separate flows, since the questions differ a lot. We usually start with whichever creates more admin.
Can it remember repeat customers?
With a login or a lookup against your system, yes. Without one it treats every chat as new and avoids sharing policy details.
